Diamond Jim Valued At $25,000+ On The Loose
By Maryland Department of Natural Resources Published: July 3, 2008 Print EmailBALTIMORE - Today, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released the newest batch of specially tagged rockfish into the waters off Fort McHenry as the 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge, featuring the elusive Diamond Jim, entered its fourth month. The release from the DNR Fisheries Service’s Sou’wester was just in time for the Fourth of July Weekend. Governor Martin O’Malley has proclaimed Friday, July 4th Take Me Fishing™ Day, and is encouraging Maryland citizens and visitors to take a young person out for a fun, fishing adventure on Maryland’s final free fishing day of 2008. “We are committed to continuing the traditions of our parents and theirs by teaching Maryland’s children to fish, and in doing so instilling an appreciation of the past, present and future gifts of our spectacular waterways,” said Governor O’Malley. “Take Me Fishing™ Day is an opportunity for families to bond and to help our next generation grow to become informed stewards who will continue Maryland’s rich fishing heritage.” Designed to promote recreational fishing in Maryland, recognize angler efforts and inspire environmental stewardship, the 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge began April 12 and will run through Labor Day, Sept. 1. Any angler who catches a citation-qualifying fish and enters the challenge becomes eligible to win one of the official grand prizes. To date, more than 1,000 anglers have qualified to win one of the grand prizes, including a 2008 Toyota Tundra 4x4 pickup truck from Central Atlantic Toyota, a boat and trailer package from Bass Pro Shops and $5,000 in fishing gear from Bill’s Outdoor Center. “Anyone and everyone can take part in the summer-long Maryland Fishing Challenge,” said Gina Hunt, Maryland Fisheries Service Deputy Director. “As a mother, I recognize the importance of encouraging children to explore the outdoors and Take Me Fishing™ Day is an excellent opportunity to enjoy such activities.” While children under 16 do not need a license to fish in Maryland, Free Fishing Days allow those 16 and over to catch and possess finfish in the tidal and non-tidal waters of the State for recreational purposes without an angler's license, Chesapeake Bay sportfishing license, or any fishing stamp normally required by the State.
