Do not put away the boat just yet. Big Striped Bass have been being caught in the Middle and Lower Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. These fish have been around for a few weeks now and anglers who are getting out are enjoying great action on some larger striped bass. Trolling has been main method of locating the fish, but light tackle anglers have also had great success once the school is located. One and two once jigs or plastics have been the ticket. (Picture above is Grand Pa Fish Jr. Crew with a monster Striped Bass caught this past week in the middle bay area while trolling. Nice fish, way to go!) Fisheries News Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service has rescheduled the public hearing for yellow perch due to inclement weather. The public hearing will be on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, MD. Parking is available across from the Tawes State Office Building at 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD. Public comments ill be taken through December 26, 2007.
The 2007 session of the General Assembly created a Task Force on Fishery Management to review current Maryland management and develop recommendations for methods for improvement. Findings and recommendations are due December 1, 2008. In anticipation of possible changes in management philosophy, the proposed yellow perch regulations are intended to be effective for only 2007. Yellow perch management regulations would be reviewed for consistency with the Task Force findings in late 2008 and recommended directions could be incorporated in subsequent regulations.
A summary of the proposed yellow perch regulations can be accessed here Weekend/Upcoming Fishing Events It does not look like there is much going on in the way of events this weekend. Fishing Reports Upper Bay Region (Susquehanna River/Flats to Bay Bridge Waters) I think the last push of striped bass action in the upper Chespaeake is over with the recent deep drop in water temperatures. Some anglers are catching a few white perch, but other then that action, things have slowed.Mid Bay Region (Bay Bridge to Honga River Waters) Bay Bridge area fishing has slowed, but towards the mouth of Eastern Bay down to the Honga River trolling anglers have been finding some nice Striped Bass. These fish have been around for a few weeks now and anglers who are getting out are enjoying great action on some larger striped bass. Trolling has been main method of locating the fish, but light tackle anglers have also had great success once the school is located. One and two once jigs or plastics have been the ticket. The trick has been staying on the fish once you find them, so if you do find them, get those jigs down quick and get in on the action. Finding them again can be tough.Look at the deep channel area in front of Bloody Point down to around Buoy 83 and along the western side of the shipping channel from Breezy Point down to the Gas Docks.
Lower Bay (Honga River down to the Maryland /Virginia Line Waters) Mike from Buzz’s Marina in Ridge reported: "What a great day if you could get off work. Mine started with the sunrise waiting on Ida Mae........ but when he got here he didn't disapoint us. Got his fish and got back in early. He didn't even put out planers today. John Keister fished but didn't stick around for pictures, he and his crew had a boatload of beauties. The only other one I got a picture of were the Cecil Brothers from Charles
County. It was a little rough this morning but as soon as the tide turned it laid right down. Everybody fished Buoy 70. The Cecil Brothers said there was a lot of boats there but it really got tight because of a netter who was working in the midst of the birds. That's where they wanted to be but unfortunately it wasn't going to happen. I had one other boater who went out and darn near right away picked up a derelict crab pot and messed up his motor so he's back in and looking at repairs. It was pretty old and had been out there a while from the looks of it. Other than that incident, everyone enjoyed fishing in t-shirts in December." Walleye Pete from Four Season’s Guide Service have moved his operation to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for the annual migration of HUGE striped bass, so he will be reporting in our Virginia Fishing Reports. Ocean City Fishing Report Ocean City Fishing Center Reported: from Dec 11: Capt. Nick on the “Get Sum” caught his limit of Stripers during both of his bay charters Saturday and Sunday. One of our private slip holders went trolling in the ocean and caught 1 60 pound Tuna and lost another just 10 miles out.
Sue Foster from Oyster Bay Tackle and Fenwick Tackle reported: Stripers are still around but not many "keepers" inshore. Anglers are going offshore and trying to get a keeper within the 3 mile zone. Indian River and Delaware Bay are also seeing stripers when the weather permits.
There's a few stripers in the surf, along with some sharks Most anglers with boats in the water are fishing slightly offshore trying for stripers and big bluefish.
Gabby Mancini owner of Mancini's resturant in Fenwick Island has been fishing offshore on nice days with metal jigs and Storm Lures chasing the birds. He's caught a lot of "short" stripers within the 3-mile zone and
huge bluefish outside the 3-mile zone. One day he came in and said his arms hurt from reeling in so many fish. He released everything he caught. Finally, on the 12th, he caught a legal 31-inch striper inside Little Gull Shoal.
Larry Jock of the Coastal Fisherman reports on Friday the 14th: "The striper bite inside 3 miles petered out today. Nada... nothing! Some folks fishing for bluefish outside the 3 mile line got into stripers in 60-90 feet of water. Some stripers were caught a mile south of Little Gull."
We haven't heard much, but some stripers should be biting from the Rt. 50 Bridge at night when the conditions are right. Anglers catch the keepers on large baits such as 6-inch Swimming Shad lures. They're also catching them on bucktails with curltail grubs attached and Zoom or Fin-S Fish soft bodies on lead heads.
I would guess that with all the wind and cold temperatures we have had over the last few days fishing all over the Chesapeake Bay region will slow further. But, check back later this week and we will have a post-storm fishing report for you. I hope everyone has a great week and I look forward to reading everyone’s reports if you make it out on the Maryland Tidal Fish Chesapeake or the Tidal Fish Mid Atlantic Offshore Message Board. Until next week, good times, good fishing and Happy Holidays!
