North Carolina Saltwater Fishing Reports
The weather calmed down this week for some good offshore and nearshore fishing. The king mackeral bite has started to pick up not too far off the beach. A decent number of late year billfish were caught in the past week as well. Inshore, the standard fare of red drum, flounder, and blue fish are being picked up.

Bill from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center reported: " October 23, 2009 Fishing Report Offshore boats caught lots of dolphin, dolphin and tuna mixes and all tuna. Yellowfin tunas way outnumbered blackfins.A 104 pound big eye was caught. A blue marlin was caught and released. Inshore boats caught lots of tailor bluefish and false albacore. Open boats caught sheepsheads, tautog, triggerfish and sharks. The sharks were all released.
October 22, 2009 Fishing Report Lots of tuna jumping sending showers of small (3inche) baitfish into the air all around. When this happens it is often difficult to get them to bite. Today it required patience and skill to achieve the desired results that is limits of yellowfin tunas and good numbers of blackfin tunas. A blue marlin was caught and released. An impressive wahoo (58 pounds) was caught. At this time of the year dolphin are usually not plentiful. Two catches included limits of dolphin (mahi mahi). In addition to the good tuna fishing that took place offshore, inshore boats caught false albacore and tailor bluefish, Open boats caught triggerfish, sheepsheads and tautog.
October 21, 2009 Fishing Report What a perfect day for fishing! And fish we did! Soft winds and mild temperatures made for a great day to be on the ocean. Offshore boats had really good catches of Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna. They also caught Dolphin and some Wahoo. A 54lb Wahoo was caught by John Griffin of Chesapeake, Va. David Larkin, also of Chesapeake caught a 67lb Wahoo. Katie Morgan of Franklin, NC caught and released a White Marlin!Inshore boats caught Red Drum and some BIG (according to the captain) Dusky's Sharks. The Miss Oregon Inlet reported slow fishing, but did catch Flounder and Sea Mullet. Thursday looks to be more of the same. Check in later to see what they bring in."
TW's Bait and Tackle reported: " October 24, 2009 Fishing Report Surf Fishing Report: It is 10:30 Am. I just heard the Puppy Drum are from Coquina to the Bridge. Big bite. Surf fishing was fair on Friday. There were Black Drum, Puppy Drum, Bluefish and very small Trout caught. Sound Fishing Report: The Little Bridge on the Nags Head/Manteo causeway reported very small Trout. Nags Head: Trout. Outer Banks: Small Trout and Small Sea Mullet Inshore Boats Report: Open boats reported Tautog, Triggers, Sheepshead and Shark. Offshore Boats Report: Dolphin and Tuna mixes. A 104 lb big eye citation was caught on Friday and 1 Blue Marlin was released.
October 23, 2009 Fishing Report Surf Fishing Report: SW calm winds and water is slick. There were scattered Drum and Bluefish caught from ramp 2 to the Bridge on Thursday. Sound Fishing Report: The Little Bridge reported Trout, Flounder and Black Drum Pier Fishing Report: Avalon: Trout, black Drum, Sea Mullet and Spot. Nags Head: Trout, Blues and Pompano. Outer Banks: Spot, Bluefish, Trout and Black Drum. Inshore Boats Report: Near shore are catching False Albacore and Bluefish. Open boats are catching Triggers, Sheepshead and Tautogue. Offshore Boats Report: Yellowfin, Blackfin and Wahoo. To quote the Oregon Inlet Marina, Dolphin are not usually plentiful this time of the year, but caught limits of Dolphin on Thursday.
October 22, 2009 Fihsing Report It is the best Drum season I have seen in 20 years. It is unreal. The weather is beautiful. It could get no better than this. The piers are catching plenty of Puppy Drum, Spot and Trout. Good Trout bite late afternoon yesterday. Near shore boats caught Spanish, Bluefish and plenty of Triggers on Wednesday.
