DE DNREC has finally begun dredging the Assawoman canal !!!
With the restrictions that have been placed on the project (can only dredge Oct-Dec), it will take 2-3 years to complete.
Last time I made it through the canal (other than in a small skiff) was 1982. I remember listening to John Cougar's 'Jack and Diane' as we left the inlet for the ocean on that day. I've been waiting for this since then.
Even after it is finished, the 6MPH speed limit (which we can assume wil be strictly enforced) will make the 4 mile passage a 40 minute ordeal. Despite that, it should now be about comparable in time, and better on fuel to go to IR inlet from South Bethany rather than OC Inlet - and the fishing is better at IR !!
This will finally open up the Indian River Bay to the folks who live along the Assawoman. It will be icing on the cake if it delivers the much-needed flushing and oxygenation to the upper reaches of the Assawoman.
