Considering my last 8 days of fishing consisted of mostly spinfishing with a little fly fishing I posted that on the Chesapeake board. However yesterday's trip was solely focused on fly angling (with the exception of the lovely lady on the boat that faired better spinfishing). So here's that report:

Yesterday we were met with near perfect conditions... chilly start warming to about 62-64, winds were hardly existent to start and only increased slightly through the day to maybe 10 knots. Perfect for my fly anglers, all we needed was fish. With a flood tide around 10 and water temps. at 62 I thought we had hit a good day. We started around the Puppy Hole near buoy #8 chasing birds in hopes of some breaking fish since I had little incoming tide left and wanted to fish the shallows on the fall. Well, chasing birds was just that which produced nothing for us and the only bent rod I saw was on another boat who had foul hooked a gull (what fun I bet that was). So off to the shallows of Janes Island. My fly guys and gal managed a few fish there but I will say that though falling noticeably the current was extremely slow moving and the skies getting brighter and this continued through the day. We made our way down Cedar Island picking off some fish here and there and as I moved on to Foxes Island the tide though still creeping along was dang near low at least 2 hrs. shy of what it should've been. Lets just say that with some patience and persistence we got on some fish in a couple spots both on structure and coming off some flats that held some good pullage. With a lower & slower running tide coupled with bright skies it sure put a damper on the shallow water fishing but we prevailed nonetheless by working drop-offs down to about 8' where the fish were holding. Key to the day was getting it down and striking at subtle bumps (which in a number cases resulted in snags but that goes along with the territory) and watching for follows. A multitude of flies were used for the day along with both intermediate and sinking lines along with the lovely lady casting a shad on spinning gear from time to time and hooking up with some consistence. All in all the action was not fast and furious but produced a decent amount of fish for the day and they had 3 nice fish in the box ranging 19-20' that went home with them for dinner.
I have a few days break before heading back out this weekend which is just as well given the rain forecast and a little bit of wind through midweek. I think that we will soon see a good push of bait move down the bay in to the sound shortly based on some reports I'm hearing from the mid and upper bay. It still looks like we're on track to have some great fishing over the next few weeks and hopefully through most of November.

Tight lines...

Hey Capt Matt,

Thanks for the report! Sounds like I need to make my way down to your neck of the woods!

Was at the Salsibury Fly Shop last weekend and was thinking of you. I give you a buzz this week.

Thanks for the report. Where are the pics?

Hey B,

Yep, you need you venture down this way sometime in the next few weeks. I'll look fwd. to hearing from you.

Pics.... sorry, some of the Specks we've been getting would've made great shots but....digital camera is on the fritz working occassionally and no LCD, and to top it off the card reader on my printer went up. I'll deal with getting a new camera over the winter.

Matt,

Passed you on the way to do some work at Fox in the am. Afternoon on the way in hit the stump pile on the sw corner of clump, tide had finally turned and they were in there thick for about a half hour.

Hey Bob,

Yep, just one of those days where it was right place right time kinda thing especially when the tide is creeping. Sounds like you hit some good action.

So you work for CBF or were just doing some stuff for them at the building? Next time you see me feel free to stop over and say hi.

I saw you going out. I went north and west. The shore line was slow however, since we had a high tide I went into the marsh and met with success there. I had the biggest fish ever caught on my boat, ME! My gentleman from Germany got excited and lost control of his spinning rod, after my fly fisherman caught a nice striper. The good news was that I bent the barb down. While my sun glasses probably saved me a trip to the hospital, the barb went in deep but I was able to back it out, OUCH!! We also had two specks...

Hey Dan,

I figured when I saw you head west that you were running the bay for breakers (did that last week and it was too slow and sporadic for me). Shallows have been real good as you know but I bet this next cold front will put damper on the speck fishing and maybe move them out.
Man, I've been hooked by wild fly casting before but never a jig. You were lucky. Just for that reason I even were sunglasses on cloudy days for the protection (and of course hide behind the console [smile].

See ya on the water....
