Considering my last 8 days of fishing consisted of mostly spinfishing with a little fly fishing I posted that on the Chesapeake board. However yesterday's trip was solely focused on fly angling (with the exception of the lovely lady on the boat that faired better spinfishing). So here's that report:
Yesterday we were met with near perfect conditions... chilly start warming to about 62-64, winds were hardly existent to start and only increased slightly through the day to maybe 10 knots. Perfect for my fly anglers, all we needed was fish. With a flood tide around 10 and water temps. at 62 I thought we had hit a good day. We started around the Puppy Hole near buoy #8 chasing birds in hopes of some breaking fish since I had little incoming tide left and wanted to fish the shallows on the fall. Well, chasing birds was just that which produced nothing for us and the only bent rod I saw was on another boat who had foul hooked a gull (what fun I bet that was). So off to the shallows of Janes Island. My fly guys and gal managed a few fish there but I will say that though falling noticeably the current was extremely slow moving and the skies getting brighter and this continued through the day. We made our way down Cedar Island picking off some fish here and there and as I moved on to Foxes Island the tide though still creeping along was dang near low at least 2 hrs. shy of what it should've been. Lets just say that with some patience and persistence we got on some fish in a couple spots both on structure and coming off some flats that held some good pullage. With a lower & slower running tide coupled with bright skies it sure put a damper on the shallow water fishing but we prevailed nonetheless by working drop-offs down to about 8' where the fish were holding. Key to the day was getting it down and striking at subtle bumps (which in a number cases resulted in snags but that goes along with the territory) and watching for follows. A multitude of flies were used for the day along with both intermediate and sinking lines along with the lovely lady casting a shad on spinning gear from time to time and hooking up with some consistence. All in all the action was not fast and furious but produced a decent amount of fish for the day and they had 3 nice fish in the box ranging 19-20' that went home with them for dinner.
I have a few days break before heading back out this weekend which is just as well given the rain forecast and a little bit of wind through midweek. I think that we will soon see a good push of bait move down the bay in to the sound shortly based on some reports I'm hearing from the mid and upper bay. It still looks like we're on track to have some great fishing over the next few weeks and hopefully through most of November.
Tight lines...
