SIZE="2"][/SIZE]Due to various issues related to new fuel my old (10yr) outboard is non-functional. A fair amount to rebuild, which may only prolong the agony as manufactures rep and tech. say's it could happen again due to engine age and new fuel.
Looking for advise as to which brand the fisherpersons of this board would repower with....
I'm leaning to 4 stroke, 225 hp range....warranties are important, reliability obviously is too. Boat manufacturer say additional weight shouldn't be a problem, but advised to add 100lbs with old motor and float boat to see where scuppers are and then get into boat and check it out. Engine transom motorwell my preclude use of presnt motor type as manuf. believes it will hit on both sides during hard turns.
Warranties seem to vary greatly....from bumper to bumper for the full time, to one's that "depriciate in coverage" as years roll by...
I know everyone has favorites....I've owned two boats with two different engine types....ran each for approximately 10 years and loved both...always ran great and reliable...
Many $$ are going into this decision so I thought ya'lls imput might help me to be better informed

I'll be brave and start. What size boat and year/type of o/b are you talking about? Just because and engine sits doesn't mean a rebuild is required. You're being suckered into a new engine for minor problems. Install a good fuel filtering system and worst case spilt and clean the carbs. From the little details the fix takes an afternoon and $100.

a ring let loose on carb four and the piston head has pieces missing....it compleatly shut off...refired it and it was rattling badly....I shut it off and had seatow tow me to ramp....I'm not a mechanic but it doesn't look good from what I see

by the way its a 200 yamaha saltwater series...1998 on a 20' grady white

Ouch. If you float the boat with additional weight for the engine I would also toss in the usual gear you carry and full fuel weight. I have to keep my scuppers plugged except to drain manually when required.

Anyone have any thoughts/knowledge on this outboard?? 225 W/ vtec?? 5 year warranty looks superior to others.

I don't think I would invest 15 to 17K$ on a 10 year old 20 foot boat, (even if it is a Grady). I think you will end up motor rich and boat poor. Find a late model used motor in good shape for 30% the cost. You may wind up selling the old boat in a couple of years and your going to take a beating on the new motor.

I Not Sure Whats Going On With Your Old Out Board Motor But A Ten Year Old Boat Is Not To Old To Put A New Motor On If The Boat Is In Good Shap And You Like The Boat. I Would Check Out Deep Blue Marine In Va Beach They Do A Lot Of Repowers And Are Very Good At What They Do. They Take Care Of Their Customers First. The Guys I Know That Have Had Ther Boats Repowered Their Tell Me They Do First Class Work. I Know The Us Navy & The Us Coast Guard Get There Boats Worked On There All The Time Thats A Good Sign. I Know My Honda Runs Great An Never Have Any Problems With It. They Sell Honda , Suzuki , Yamaha.

for the input guys.....boats in great shape and has all electronics working.....so I repowered with a brand new Yamaha 250 four stroke.....break in almost over....ready for offshore adventure when weather window opens!!!
