I want to run a bead around the base of my console to deck joint wondering what would be best sealer for the job?
Thanks

3M 5200 comes to mind. Are you going to pop it off; put down a bead of sealant then reattach it? It would be best if you did.

I would use a very good Silicone caulk.

I generally find that plain silicone has little adhesiveness and your bead will pull away in no time (like a few months). If you are loosening fasteners, applying silicone, and re-tightening fasteners, that's fine. But if you have a seam that you want sealed "from the outside", you want a good strong marine adhesive like 3M 5200 or 4000. I'd lean towards the 5200 b/c it doesn't sound like the kind of thing you'll need to get off later. Just lay painters tape on either side of the seam, run the bead, and use a latex gloved hand to push the bead into the seam and smooth it out.

Boat Life makes a very good sealer called LifeSeal. It is a combination of silicon and polysulfide that does an excellent job f sealing and if necessary you can remove it. Some of the "sealants" people use actually have adhesive qualities so great that when you try to remove the material it will pull the gel coat off. Unfortunately, 3M 5200 is one of those products.
Opinion: LifeSeal as I have been using it for years and it does its job very well. I have it around the deck plate that covers my fuel tank (80" x 21") and it has yet to break a seal even with people walking on it all the time.

white silicone is the best to use. 5200 will yellow and breakdown in the sun.

I may want to remove it at some point. have experienced the trouble with 5200 removing a motor bracket along with a layer of glass. have been thinking of trying the life caulk and if it peels moving up to 4200. thanks for every ones input.

There is a compound called . . . I have to go look . . .Back now . . . Anti Bond 2015. It comes in a little spray can. It eats up 5200 but not gelcoat. I have used it with good results when removing some 5200 that I used to hold my windshield in place.
I got it at the local boat parts store.

5200 gets my vote:thumbup:
If you use it don't put it between the console and the ceiling......let your screws hold the console in place and coat em' with 5200 before you screw em' in to prevent water leaking into the hull.........use a small bead of 5200 around the console edges where it meets the ceiling to prevent water from going inl.......and if you need to take it up it shouldn't be a problem.
