Good afternoon fellow TFers!
My 8-year old grandson caught his first citation croaker last Tuesday on the Rapp. How does a person apply for a citation in Va. Waters on Rapp.? Any information will be appreceiated.
Thanks
Russell

Go to any tackle shop that is a weigh station. You can have them weigh the fish (a little late now) or register it for a release citation if it was released. You will need a witness and his signature on the form - expect his plaque in a little less than a year.
See here for more information on the brochure: Virginia Marine Resources Commission (http://www.mrc.state.va.us/vswft/index.shtm)
And congratulations to him for the catch! I am still working on mine.

The state also offers a award for youth anglers who catch 6 different types of fish during a season. The shops that have the release application also should have the youth program info as well. When my kids got theirs years ago, the state sent a certificate and a hat for their accomplishments. My kids caught all of their different species from a pier.
Good luck!

To cuhollow,
I looked at the VMRC website, and I thought there was a form I could print off? I will have to check out a tackle shop for there form.
To rivah2c,
I did find the junior angler program, and it looks like they start it JAN.1 of the new year! So far he has 2- fish knocked out on the list, 1-Croaker, 1-Rockfish. I would say by mid summer he'll have all 6 fish on the list!
Thank you both for the information!

Remember - for a Jr. Angler Achievement Award, they must RELEASE 6 different species, not just catch. I think he already has a head start!

There isn’t any form to print off. The weigh station keeps the form (it is one of those 3 sheet carbon copy deals) and they have to sign off on it to make it official. They also handle mailing it into VMRC so keep your copy just in case.

I sort of doubt that a marina would weigh in and report a citation fish that is a week old. You could try though.

They would do the release.
