The reel is going to depend on the planer you want to pull. I use an old Penn 80T with 200# power pro to a #12 planer. Thats a lot of force on a reel, a rod, and a rod holder. You could use a Tiagra 50LRS with the same power pro and it would work. If you only plan on a #4 planer you could get away with a TDL 25 or 6/0. Good luck. Martin

Penn 12/0 works fine and will handle just about anything......I can't bring myself to use a Tiagra or Internatioanl 50 or 80 for the kind of abuse a planer reel sees.

Daiwa makes a cheap planer rod. I picked up a brand new one at Green Top Sporting Goods in Ashland for 79$. Thats right 79$. Nothing fancy and it may be a piece of shit, but I'm willing to try it for 80 bucks. Having said that, I'm not planning on pulling the the giant Old Salty planers alot of the guys are using. I have good luck with the #3 and #4 sea striker planers an will continue to use them until they stop catchin fish.

We use a Penn 12/0, 150# Power Pro and a Sea Striker #8 high speed planner. It works great. Have been out of Hatteras 3 times in the past 2 weeks and it has caught fish each time.
I tried the tip I saw on this sight to wrap a couple of heavy rubber bands around the first guide after you set the planner. It really works. It allows you to back off on the drag so you reduce the load on the reel while at the same time keeping a hard strike from snapping the leader. Of course, when that Power Pro gets rolling, it slices right through the rubber bands.

Penn 12/0 works great with 200# Power Pro. I have used this for years with never a hick-up. Half the price and rock solid!

I'm using a 9/0 but I only pull up to a #8 high speed.

i use the avet expro narrow spool. i like it cause the pp gets packed and stays tight on narrow spool. plus thats a lot of extra ling to put on that spool. before i got that setup, i used a 6/0 on a senator rod and caught plenty of tuna. the 9/0 or 12/0 senator is a cheap way to get by for a while . hell thats all the charter boats use. for rec. guys, i really suggest the bridal rig so you are not hanlining 50-100+ feet of leader. cheap rods work ok, but i would go for a billfisher without rollers and sica guides for a cheap rod in 80-130# or do a bentbut with big foots or large sica guides so leaders and loops go go through smoothly.
