Launched out of Atlantic Highlands for a father's day fishing trip with my dad & my buddy Kevin. Lots of bunker still in the bay. Water temps anywhere from 67 to 71 degrees F.
Had some good fluke success on squid strips and clams. Lots of skates, sand sharks, and sea robbins. We where mainly targeting stripers, but only found one of them that measured about 22 inches.
Late Saturday morning, we found a big flock of birds picking off the pieces of a blue's blitz, so we got a lot of good quality blues off of these blitzes until it attracted practically every boat in NY and NJ. There are a lot of people out there that really know how to ruin a good top water blitz by running their boats full speed right into the middle of the school of fish. This includes the head boats that bully their way into the blitz by blowing their horns and forcing smaller boats out of the way. I was real tempted to report them to the coast guard. Anyway, I got mad enough after about 10 sets to just leave the area and head south to Ashbury Park.
Wrapped up Saturday night with some good topwater blues action in the bay where they where hanging out in about 18 ft. of water about 3 miles from the Atlantic Highlands marina. We each hooked up with about 40 blues over an hour and a half on top water baits before we had to head in because of the thunderstorms.
Tight Lines.
