motor is late 80- early 90 not sure exactly what year. problem is it ran good for about 5 hours running trotline, she would load up a bit, i would take it for a burn to clean it out, worked fine, then all of a sudden it just shut off, fired back up sounded different like it was only runng on 2 of 4 cyl. took cover off and messed around it would start but if i could get in to gear before it shut off again it would hardly move, 2000 rpm tops (usually 5000 rpm), anyway got it running and bumped the r's up in neutral sounded good, but under a load it just dies. my question is i restricted airflow a little on the carbs while in neutral with r's bumped up a little, bottom carb with air restricted motor dies (i think thats whats supposed to happen ?), top one with air restricted motor actually seemed to run a bit better, did not choke it out at all, so what does that mean??? i am lost when it comes to merc, this is my first one i have ever owned, so if anyone has any ideas for me to try before i spend a small fortune and take to a mech. i would appreciate it.
Thanks, Ryan

narrowed it down to either stator or switch box, very weak spark on top 2 cylinders spark on bottom 2 is ok, does any one know of a way to test either one, stator or switch box. dont want to spend money on a part i dont need

You can test the switchbox by frogging the trigger leads.
don't forget to check the trigger they can go bad also,

here is some more info
