Atlantic Beach Report

I usually post on the Chesapeake board, but I spent the past week with wife in Atlantic Beach. We had a land breeze on most days, so I was able to take my small boat out in the ocean. Last Tuesday, we found macs from 12 - 18" about 1 - 2 miles off of Shackleford Banks from the ship channel to 3/4 of the way to Cape Lookout. There were few breakers, but there were a lot of fish. We had no problem catching macs trolling Clark spoons and Huntington drones with 2 - 6 oz. of weight at a speed of 6.3 - 7 m.p.h. We kept 15 of the best fish and then went sight seeing at the light house.

The storm last week scattered the macs, but on Saturday, I found breakers just east of the ship channel about 3 miles out. Caught all I wanted trolling, then caught more casting 3/4 oz. crippled herring spoons.

Fished A.M. Saturday in the Haystscks marsh. Caught 1 spec and a bunch of small grouper and lizard fish on artificials. I have yet to develope the local knowledge to fish the marshes effectively.

ATLANTIC BEACH- Never have been there before, My wife and I are going for a week, she does not fish. Because it is our first time there I am going to leave my boat , (Triton 240 LTS) home. Concerned about a safe secure place to keep it when I am not around. I am trying to confirm a red fish trip with Capt. Matt. Reds are the main reason I picked this area this time of year, but I will fish for anything. I will bring some surf fishing tackle also. Looking for any helpful info or if some one needs a partner for a day (or two). Thanks to all.

240 LTS, I have been to A.B. a number of times. I found the best fishing from shore to be at the North end. When you go over the bridge into A.B. from Morehead City turn left at the main intersection. Continue straight into the Navy? base and past the civil war fort on your left. Go to the end and turn left and park there. Fish the back water at the West side at the curve. Flounder, drum, blues, etc. Bob

If you can there is a Spot right when you cross the bridge on the right hand side , it gets busy there but the best time to fish it is a dusk into the wee hours after dark.. Its right at the bridge South side... Trout get in there about that time in the eve.. I was just there last week and fished Fort Macon and did Squat, it was a full moon and that could have been part the reason but the few fish I caught were so small that I barely knew I had a bite... Talked to a guy at Freemans Bait and tackle which is on the Left after you cross the bridge at the light and he said a few nice flounder were caught at the bridge but from Boats at night so Good luck ,,, The surf was full of grass last week and it was hard to fish but there were Spanish in close , I could'nt get them to hit anything but they were jumping all over... I saw some small Black drum and Whiting ( sea Mullet) caught from the surf ... SOme of the Whiting were pretty nice...

Capt Stacy goes out for Halfday and FUll day trips for $50 and $90 but they cancelled my trip because the lack of people.... the Fishing center is on the left after you cross the bridge as well

hipie, if fishing the inside of the sound what tackle do you recommend? Get mullet and or shrimp from the bait store or net my own?

BLUEZWAITN, Is Capt Stacy on a head boat? Do they stay in the sound?

If all else fails to get to some red fish and or surf fishing I may try the head boat.
