About 8 years ago, we went out of OI in the middle of January and caught 4 nice 50# class yellowfin right at the Point. With the right water temperature profile for a long enough time period I think you can catch them any time of the year from the point south.

They can be found year around when the conditions are right. Usually from the Point south but I can remember a couple years ago getting into a nice class of fish in January way up on the 900 in like 850 fathoms. We then went due west & also hit the Stripers to round out a great trip. There were a few caught last weekend from the rocks areas.

It's been a bit tougher in recent years but it used to be a pretty sure bet for winter pups along the Gulfstream edge. You can also run into Bluefin out there so be ready for anything.

The current is usually strong & the fish are moving but when you find them they can wack ya good. It's always best to avoid days with N winds in the winter cause that direction bucks the tide.

Lots of life out there along the edge really gets the cabin fever in check fast. Good luck if you get out.:fishing2:

Whacked and stacked a five man limit on Jan. 1 a couple of years ago @ The Point. Back at the dock by 11:30. Best YF tuna day I ever had...

Jan 2009 edition of saltwater sportsman talks about the "Hot winter tuna bite of NC" on the cover so someone I think can always catch them if they can get out and find decent water.

I believe we caught a YFT last year in the first part of January out of Hatteras. I have seen charters come in with nice numbers of YFT in January. There is supposed to be an early Spring run of them in March out of Hatteras--usually decent sized fish--40-50# class. The real problem for us small boat guys is finding weather to get out to find them, it doesn't settle down until later. However, if you are flexible with your schedule and can get down there on short notice, the opportunity is there.

It all depends on the water out there, I've been out in Jan. and Feb. and hit it just right on a sixpack off HI and cleaned em up in less than 2 hours. Also went down and couldn't buy a bite because the water wasn't right, cold green water and no temp. breaks. Washed ballyhoo all day and nothing to show for it.
