My sons and I were in VA Beach the last week of December 08 and were not able to catch any big strippers. This is our 3rd trip without taking home any fish. When is the next best time to visit VA Beach to try our luick? I think I remember reading something about the Spring being a good time. Any advise???

Depends on when you go, the hot ones don't start dancing til 11pm;-)

The fish move with the water temp, so right now they are just moving back to along the coast. Soon the water temp will bring the rest of them back into the bay. By early spring time they are up the rivers to spawn and some will move back to the bridges in later spring.
When they open for the May June season, you can catch a ride with someone as a HO on this board and chunk for them around structure or take a small boat charter like the Matty J Charters and he will take you chunking or live baiting for them. Often chunking only brings the 20-27" fish, but live bait works for the larger fish and Tommy will even tell you when the bigger ones arrive. 804 314 2672.

i heard they were really moving around the poles...the silver ones...out past the strip...you cant miss them...out past the two mounds...look for the dropoff...From what a friend of mine tells me...the big females have really been pushing and working after sundown lately. From what he says almost everynight. he said they really like big eels.

It does not pay to not to check your spelling.
Now, where are those silver poles?
Leave the guy alone. He is a great dad for taking his sons to find big strippers. As far as the silver poles, I only see one stripper at a time around the pole. I hope he finds them without spending too much money and hope the boys know what to do with them.

Spring can be good. If you looking for catch and release. I went out on Monday around the first island and we caught 62 fish. The biggest being 36 inches 22 pounds. Lots of fun but we fished the same spot earlier and nothing.. Once the tide gets moving bad spots can change to amazing spots. Work the pilings youll find them eventually.

The big strippers don't taste anywhere as good as the smaller ones and don't ask how I know

with the big strippers, they are easier to find because they can't hide behind the pole. And usually you will only find one per pole given their size. They are much easier to catch than the smaller ones. You will find it doesn't take as much work either, once you set your drift just catch a wave, takes all the work out of it.
It is cheaper as well, the smaller ones requier so much more maint. and you have to have a pretty boat on and on. Lots of times the smaller ones will have 2 or more lures at one time, which can cause problems when in a crowd.
On the slow days If they seem to have lock jaw use flour, just dump it out (kinda like chum) when the spot shows up start jigging.

I'm laughing so hard I can't think of anything funny to say. My wife is asking me what's so funny and my kids think I'm laughing at them playing the Wii.

I like the thin strippers the best. The big ones tend to be a bit smelly.

Favorite bait is LIncolns or Jacksons or Franklins., Washingtons are a little too small. Use waving action and whistles or a loud voice presentation.

The last really BIG stripper I saw was that big ol' 300 lb, sweaty gal at Clancy's A-Go-Go, on Little Creek Road back in the early 70's. Whew! What a hoss. I think she got hooked a couple of times but they always seemed to jump her off at the side of the boat.

Rich,
Are you talking about in the rivers or along the ocean front?
