I have a 2001 Ford Excursion Diesel. The AC compressor is not coming on, everything else works. I tried replacing the diod, fuse, swapped out the relay, but no luck.
Anyone have any ideas where to check next?
Thanks In Advance!!

The usual culprit is the low pressure sensor for the freon. You can usually jump this out to see if its the trouble but it's not the sensor that's usually bad. It the low Freon most of the time. Where the heck you been to need the AC....sounds nice.

Are you sure the system is charged? There is a low pressure cutout switch, that you can unplug and jump the wires to see if that engages the clutch.
Yea what he said, besides he is faster at typing than i am

Any idea where the sensor is located? I'll try jumping it then have the system checked for freon levels...
I'l pretty warm blooded and if my truck is in sun I get a bit warm. Also, the AC is important to the windshield defrost.
I wish I were in the sun belt till spring... :D

Switch should be located on the passenger side firewall.Look for a cylinder that the freon line runs through[should be silver in color]with a wire going to it with a plug, unplug the wire from the accumulator and jump a wire across the plug on the end of the wire.

Also, leaks are very easy to find most times.Just look for the dirt and dust as it sticks to the oil from the refrigerant at the leak.Fords system uses O-rings at their unions and alot of times thats where the leak is found.

I just tried to unplug te low pressure switch, it's not coming off for my fat hands... ARGHHH..
I guess it's one for the repair shop... Any ideas where to go in Norfolk or VB???
I have a bud whose really good, but he's at the outer banks and quite a hike...
I am not looking for a kid with little or no experience to screw things up... I need an honest, reasonable, AC repair.

Lucian I know of a mechanic that does great work. He saved me thousands on my trucks. He lives in Norfolk not far from you. He does great work !
Let me know if your interested and I will hook you up with him.

I'd go to the auto part store and buy some feon and see if adding some gets it going then take it to a shop. I have a small leak in mine and have to add some ever year.

This is one of the reason's I will not own a ford. I have experienced this with cars; a dealership milked this for all it was worth replacing various expensive components. I asked to have all the O-rings replace in another ford when having problems with leaks and the mech refused. Stands to reason if you have one go bad then perhaps it might be smart to replace all.
Good luck with the repair but beware of shysters. This is one item they love to abuse.

If you jump the low pressure switch connector and the clutch engages but the ac does not blow cold then most likely it is low on freon from a leak. If this is the case and the bolt on the front of the compresor is a 8mm bolt head then I would pull it off and check it with a black light. That year should have come from the factory with dye in the ac system already. I suspect that it is the compressor shaft seal that is leaking. I used to give my customers a option of replacing just the seal or the whole compressor just depended on how much money they wanted to spend.
Of course there is a chance that it is just a oring that is leaking in the system somewhere but my guess from my experience with working on or with Fords since 95' is that it is the compressor front seal leaking. If that is the case you are probably looking at around $650 to $800 from a dealership for a compressor installed and recharged.
Good luck

HOLD ON, as the owner of the busiest shop on Shore drive, i cant just sit back and take this. Do not go get a can of crap and pump it in there, do not short out the lo switch(its there for a reason). Go to Cavalier garage, talk to Pete, they will help. The owner, Jody, has like 30 Ford trucks, no one can help you like he can. If your refrigerant is low, you have a leak, it needs to be fixed. There are like 900 other factors at play, though. If your vehicle wasnt so large I would offer help, those Ford diesels make my techs grumpy:)

Leak found.... ARGHHHH
I took the truck to NC to a bud and he evacuated the system, recharged it, added dye and found a small leak at the low pressure valve, he replaced it while I waited.
I drove the truck home, then he called me this morning and said he found dye on the ground where the rear of my truck was. I looked under the truck and the small diameter (long as crap) line running the length of the truck, just in front of the rear wheel at the bend is the culpret. I am waiting for him to call me back to see what I need to do next. He said I may be able to have the line repaired or replaced.
I am going to get some local prices before I drive 1 1/2 hours back down.
I could use a couple of names and numbers if possible.
Thanks,
Lucian
