Has anyone harvested a bird with a bow? I would like to try this spring. Any advice on set up,shot placement, broadheads would be appreciated.:helpsmilie:

Try using Decoys with one jake and two hens. Have the hens in front and the jake following in a triangle pattern and importantly, facing you. A tom will often come into a set up like this in full strut, and will want to face the jake. With its fan open and towards your setup this will give you a chance to draw, even at close range, as his fan will hide its head. After he comes out of strut the game is over, too late for Mr. Longbeard. The new quiotine broadheads are very effective for neck shots, but you range can be limited with these down to 20yds. or so. Conventional broadheads can be used for body shots though some newer ones offer slower penetration to cause more damage. Check out Cabela's turkey section. Good luck and hope this helps

definately the most important thing is the decoys facing you, also dont be afraid to put them within 5 yards of your spot. i have shot mine with both a regular broadhead, shot placement has to be at where the wing connects to the body or dead center of the backto shatter the spine otherwise you just lost an arrow and the turkey will die 2 to 3 days later, ive also used the guillotine and the magnus bullhead the guillotine i didnt like not very acurate. but the bullhead is accurate up to 25 yds. and if you cant get a head shot and all you get is back shot the impact of the arrow will shatter the spine and will make them drop like a pile of bricks.

great advice guys. Also, another thing to never underestimate is the importance of being completely concealed, head to toe, or behind a blow down and/or in a ground blind. Those birds, as you probably know, have incredible instincts...and while an old tom's guard is down in the spring, they'll detect the slightest movement. Nothing worse than pulling one in range and having him (or his hens) detect you. The worst sound in the world is the high pitch cluck that turkeys do when they detect something unusual.... Good luck!

mathews.....wouldnt be caught dead with one of them damn things:eek2:i shoot a bear:clapping2:
to answer your shot placement question the "sweet spot" again is where the wing connects to the body or a little higher your looking to break the spine so that they cant run or fly away.

What issues do you have with Mathews? I can tell you that they produce one of the best bows in the industry. They also stand behind their bows 100% "full" warranty. Many people don't like them because of their cost but I would never buy any other bow. My uncle shoots a split limb Hoyt and he is on his 3rd set of limbs, each set breaking during the peak of the Delaware rut. He then sends the bow back and does not get it back for 3 months (season over). I a few years back shot the biggest deer of my career a typical 10 that scored just under a 140', during the excitment of telling the land owner and where I put my gear my bow got driven over by none other than yours truely. I took it back to my local Mathews dealer and they called Mathews directly. Mathews gave me congrats on the deer and told me to send the bow back and they would cover it no questions asked. I had my bow back in under 2 weeks with brand new limbs.
Their bows are priced high but you can't beat their customer service period!

mikdu401 my father shoots a mathews, and has had trouble with the twist and wieght of the bow, so when i went out to find my new bow that was one of my main concerns is the wieght, speed, kick, twist and how quiet the bow was out of the box. personally for me my bear gameover beats the mathews bows i had the opportunity to shoot, my bear is lighter, has little kick, doesnt twist, and is insanely quiet out of the box, my release was louder then my bow was after a few limbsavers, and string spider. the only thing that the mathews barely beat was the speed and the speed was only 5 to 10 mph slower than the best mathews at the time. and the price was a hundred dollars cheaper. i have used my bear for 2 seasons of hard hunting, and almost constant shooting before and during, the deer season, plus shooting for turkey. and have never had a problem, plus i just got a email from bear letting me know that they are sending me a box to put my bow into to ship it to there factory to replace the limbs, the string stop, the string and cams, plus they said that it will only take 2 weeks to get it back to me. now thats what i call customer service.

what do you mean by they "Are still Virgins". You mean they have not killed a deer or animal? I hunt in suburban areas in and around Delaware and PA. Sounds like the shooter is not making the right shots and needs to practice some more.
Me and "my Mathews" knocked down 2 quality bucks last year and 12 does.
Every shot was a complete pass thru and the animals all expired within view.
