When you guys troll your WFB for BFT what type of rigger clips do you use. I have AFTCO roller trollers and even tightened all the way down they can't hold the line without releasing. I have gone to just pulling the 80s out of the rod holders but would rather pull them from the long riggers. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pat

If your clips wont hold heavier stuff like WWB horses or bars ect with them all the way tight use a #64 rubber band around the mainline at the spot You want your bait to end up once in the clip & just clip the rubber band instead. On bars sometimes you have to use 2 of them. Usually the extra stretch from the bands help absorb the shock from waves which is what causes the clips to pop without the Rubber. If it still doesn't hold, then just use another band to hold the clip from popping & when a fish hits either the band on the mainline or on the clip will break. Like I said, also a really good way to run spreader bars from the riggers.
I use Blacks release clips for my riggers & roller trollers on my flats but either will work if they are still in good shape. The Blacks need to be replaced about every 2 years. I also keep my halyards pretty tight also.

Hey guys, really new at this tuna fishing. I see where there is a clip to attach a hooked bait to the spreader bar. Do you fight the fish with the spreader bar attached? Is the spreader bar connected to a separate line from the bait?
I know its probably a stupid question, but I don't get it.
Thanks in advance.

Never had that problem with the AFTCO roller (w/ the wheel adjuster) clips and thats the only clips I use. In fact, I have had the opposite problem until I loosen them up a little.
The ones with the sliding adjuster were crap.

AFTCO OR1 are fine. Rupp Knokouts are also good. Note that AFTCO OR2 are junk (the ones with the plastic 'slide spring' deal). AFTCO replaced my OR2's with OR1's (the old design), which work fine.

NEVER A STUPID QUESTION....We fish spreader bars from the flats shorts or the middle of the spread...my thoughts are a bar in the middle of the spread works like a teaser brings the fish into the spread so your shorts and flats will get hit as well as the bar but dosnt always work out that way..and we always fight the fish with the bar none of this bar rigger clip crap..when tuna fishing on a small boat your limited to rod space and how many you can troll do to the beam of your boat so why take up another rod holder with out a hook bait on it. Most well built bars can take a beating..you want as many hook baits in the water as you can when fishing for tuna..

Last year I decided to rig all my riggers with two clips each on each line. I used Rupp rollers and Aftco OR1s. I have them set for both light and heavy since I often run spreader bars of the short riggers. But the main reason I went with two is that if one, breaks while fishing, I got a back up. The other option is to attach your clips with heavy snap swivels and then keep a couple of spare clips on board for a quick replacement. I can tell you from experience that nothing sucks more than making a 50 mile run and then finding out that the adjustment screw fell out on the trip and you have to fish a rigger short. Keeping an assortment of rubber bands on board can also save the day.

Thanks for the replies, I have always used Roller troller(original) and have never had a problem except when pulling WFB lines. Keep on mind that these lines are a minimum of 300 yards behind the boat most days they are actually 400yds back. This causes a tremendous amount of drag. My clips don't just release when it is rough they flat out won't even hold long enough to run the line out the rigger.:helpsmilie:

I never have tried putting the WWWB on a rigger ... always run it from the rod tip in the middle of the transom. Never a problem.

Use Hit n Run's idea, it works.

Same as was said above, we run two clips on each rigger, one old style aftco roller troller and one blacks clip for the light stuff. We rarely had a problem with the aftcos not holding but when I did, I would add a #64 band to the clip and it held an ilander pro 200 yards back in 6-8 footers.
