OOHHHH Boy!! My brother did this one a few years back. He installed a new water pump on his out drive and spent the next few weeks trying to get it back together. He ended up calling a Mech. to do the job. As it turns out once you pull the outdrive you must be VERY careful NOT to rotate anything as this will miss-alling things. How do you fix it at this point ? Thats a good question,,, Call a Mech.?

Sounds like the splines on the drive shaft are not lining up,shove the drive up to where it stops then reach in with a pair of pliers and turn the shaft while pushing up.Once it lines up it will just slip into the coupler under the powerhead

I asked My Brother how they got it back on and he said they had to manualy turn the engine with it in gear to line up the spines and then it just slid on. So what Katman says may hold water. It may be just a little off so the pliers may work. My Bro. on the other hand ( young and dumb) started the moter and put the thing in gear so it was all messed up, which led up to the hand turning of the engine. Let us know what happens

You should've put it in gear before you dropped the lower unit - this allows you to turn the prop or shaft to align the splines. A jack under the skeg will help you lift with control.

No pliers needed and doesn't need to be in gear, although, it should be in the same gear as when dropped. I always have it in neutral AND don't mess with the short, splined shaft on the LU. Just rock the flywheel and the driveshaft should go right up (assuming the shift shaft wasn't messed with. Did this a bunch of times with a pair of Merc 150's I replaced several years ago.

A second person is a big help, since one can do the lifting and the other rocks the flywheel.
