after watching Dr Julie Ball teach us how to properly fish for tog i was wondering how do people catch those fiddler crabs. i have been in poquoson my whole life and ive never tried to catch one, i do know that when you approach them they all scatter and get into their holes, so i was just wondering how its done, any info would really be appreciated. THANKS

Never seen them caught with a cast net. Diggy - you can google it. There are several different ways but they require digging. Lifes to short to catch fiddlers. Throw money at the problem and support your local tackle store.

have your cast net loaded and ready to throw, throw as you walk up on them. then again you have to know where to find them, kinda like trout fishing. lol

It is easy to catch them before they can get into their holes in the mud. You need it to be a very warm day and low tide. Walk along the mud flat next to the shoreline where there are reeds, be sure to wear knee high boots. Carry a small bucket into which you would place the captured fiddlers. You just have to reach down and grab them before they get to their holes. It is an easy task! All this talk about digging a hole and placing boards in a "V" shape is unnessary. These small crabs live in among the reeds, so a cast net will not do the trick. I usually catch a couple of hundred each time I go for them. Right now, the weather is just too cold to find them out in the open. You need a very warm. sunny day for them to come out of their holes. Give it another few weeks!

Ask Arnie Ferguson. If he can't catch them, they can't be caught!

"These small crabs live in among the reeds, so a cast net will not do the trick." i've caught fiddlers for many many years in a castnet. you get them on low tide on the flats, catch 50 at a time in a net.

you can get a rod of any kind weilding wire peace of small coper tubing and you stick it in the ground next to the whole the crab went in wiggle it around to disturb the dirt by the whole and the crab will come out i have tried it and it workes :clapping2:

Big deep cycle battery, jumper cables, clamp two rods in the terminals and shove em in the ground, millions come running up out of the holes!!!! hahaha. I was taught on here last year by a guy who told me to use my minnow trap. just catch minnows at high tide, then before it starts to go out, pick the minnow trap up and throw it close to the banks where the fidds holes are, and as the water goes out the minnows start to die and the fidds go in for a snack. If they are not running around at low tide you can walk around on the shore banks where there is mud and look into the holes. You look for their legs and if you see them take a stick and stick it behind the hole and force them out. You only want to do it that way if you cant get them any other way because it will take a while.

Jamie Jamie Jamie, now PITA will be trudging through the local marshes naked in knee high boots, kicking over little ramps saving the millions of poor fiddlers you haven't yet fooled into thinking they're going to Micky D's. :D

The only places that I have able to catch them are areas where there are reeds growing. The reeds are short in height but come right down to the low water shore line. Thus, a cast net does not work. A nice, wide mud flat would be appropriate for a cast net approach but is not available. It is very easy to catch a cou0ple of hundred in a 30 to 45 minute period by just walking along the reeds.

Ya'll work too hard, hire the kids or grandkids to catch them for you. They have fun in the mud and your a hero just deny it to the mrs. when they come home dirty;-)

It's kinda funny, but it's horrible too. It'll be better in time for the lynn. pups. Just wish I knew how to catch 'em. hint..hint..
... just stick a big'ole 3-ball toe overboard near a marsh....
(back to laughing again)
Just messin' man... remind me, I'll put you on some pups.
