We caught about 60 fish at the ditch on mirrolures wed. The fish were in about 9 ft of water and wanted a slow presentation. We caught several stripers as well. It was so cold when we launched I had to take the ignition switch out of my boat and thaw it between my hands before I could turn the key. I think the air temp was 16.

Al B You will find that all the tackle shops are low on there selection of Mirrolures, I have heard that L&S Bait Co. is rebuilding the plant after a fire from a few months ago, they won't be back in full production until this summer. You can't find the new Mirrodine's any where. The trout are there and easy to catch, just hard to find since they are on the move all the time. A charter captian like David stays on them, because he is on them almost everyday. If you charter him he will show you everything, he is a great instructor. But when you go back a week later you might not catch anything, they have move and changed paterns again. That's why we need good trout charter captian's! This is what makes Speckled Trout fishing sooooo challenging and fun!

Yep, heard the same thing. Was just pointing out that anytime there's a blank spot in a tackle store, either there's a bunch of hype about a bait, or it really works. Like finding a pack of 5/0 hooks during eeleing season.

The MirrOlure...quite possibly the most versatile and effective lure you can have in your tackle box. MirrOlure and L&S Bait Company have been around for over 65 years and counting. L&S was founded in 1937 by Harold LeMaster. His innovative approach to lure manufacturing and the unique mirror like insert in his lures, give them a flashing, lifelike appearance underwater that is virtually irresistible to most game fish. Given their longstanding commitment to quality and the ability to catch fish, even under tough conditions, it’s no wonder they are still used the world over by anglers today.
Two of their most popular and what I believe, most productive lures are the 52M and 7M. The 52M is a slow sinking twitch bait. What I mean by twitch bait is that the plug does not have a built in action, such as a lipped plug does. In fact most of the MirrOlure lines are the same in that respect. They are a work of art and it is an art to master them.
You need to impart the action that the lure makes by making various twitching or short tugs on the line, using short, flicks of your wrist. The important thing is to “feel” the lure working. This helps you fine tune what the lure is doing without seeing it. Tackle plays a big role as does an “educated feel” for the lure.
The best tackle to use for MirrOlures are a 6'6" or 7' medium action spinning or casting rod with a reel that can hold at least 120 yards of 15 lb mono. The exception recently is the use of the new super braids that are out on the market. Not only is the line stronger, but much more sensitive due to the very thin diameters for a given test, you can feel every “bump” and “tick” of the lure, working it more effectively.
The 52M and, my favorite, the 38MR (a shorter, version rigged with 2 hooks instead of 3) are usually used in water that is 3 to 8 feet deep. They have a sink rate of about one foot per second. I like to use these over deeper grass flats for big trout during the day, after they move out of the shallow water or for snook in the swash channels and beaches on an in coming tide and the passes on an out going. I make my casts to areas that have some kind of transition, the edges of drop offs, sandy holes on the bottom, places where the water turns from murky to clear and where the grass meets large expanses of sandy bottom.
After the lure hits the water I will start my count down, “one thousand one, one thousand two, etc.” until the lure reaches the desired depth. Then it’s ready to work back to the boat. If you don’t catch fish on the first few casts, try varying your retrieve by working it slower or faster. Sometimes that makes all the difference to the fish, making them strike.
Another popular MirrOLure that has just recently come out on the market is the 20MR and the 22MR, also known as the Catch 2000 and the Catch 2000 Jr. They are similar in weight to the 52M and the 38M, respectively and are fished in much the same way, but can be fished in shallower water, a depth from 0 to 2'. The difference with these is the fact that they suspend, much like a real fish does. This allows you to work shallower water with a slower and more realistic presentation. Both the 20MR and 22MR are deadly over shallow grass flats and Mangrove lined banks.
The 7M is one of their oldest and in my opinion, most productive lure in the MirrOlure product line. I have caught more salt water fish with a 7M than any other lure in my tackle box and it is usually one of the first baits I throw. You can cover a lot of water in a short period of time, making it a great “search bait” as well.
The difference with the 7M is that it floats, rather than sinks like the aforementioned plugs and is fished a little differently and in many ways. The 7M21 (black back, silver sides, white belly) looks a lot like finger mullet or a wounded sardine when you get it working on and below the surface. One of my favorite and most entertaining ways to fish is to cast it out then wait a few moments, give it a sharp twitch of the rod tip then let the lure come back to the surface, twitch it slightly a few times so it leaves ripples on the surface then a few more sharp twitches. What happens next if somebody is home can be likened to throwing a hand grenade into a garbage can, then jumping in and closing the lid!
You can also reel and twitch it just under the surface to make it look like a fleeing bait fish. Sometimes this will work better than the latter. The key is to try different presentations until you start getting fish to respond.
Next in the surface lure line up is the veritable 5M. The 5M is strictly a surface lure. It comes out of the box with a propeller, fore and aft, and is a lot like the Devil Horses that you may have used in Bass fishing. The 5M creates a surface commotion that calls and irritates the fish into striking with a murderous rage! They are best suited for use during low light conditions and when the water clarity is poor
Top Dogs are worked in a “walk the dog” fashion, a side-to-side, darting action that imitates a stunned or crippled bait fish. The trick to walking the dog is to get the lure started with a slight twitch of the rod to the right, slack briefly to allow it to slow momentarily, and then bring it back with a sharp twitch to the left, followed by another moment of slacking, then to the right, slack, left twitch and so on. The reel is only used to take up slack line, not to move the plug. Some get good enough at it that they can keep the lure jumping back and forth even though they twitch only to the right or to the left, which is less tiring.
The “Dogs” are best used in low light and poor water clarity conditions. They are probably the noisiest of the walking plugs on the market. The loud sonic “click” produces explosive strikes. When worked properly, this lure is deadly on trout, snook and even redfish. Remember to vary your retrieve until you start getting strikes.
A lot of people ask, “How do I know what all those numbers and letters mean?” I have to admit, it took me years of using and buying their products to know it all by heart. A lot of newbies often are at a loss as to what the hieroglyphics of MirrOlures really mean.
The first numbers are the model number. “M” means MirrOlure, if it is followed by an “R” that means it has rattles inside the body. The last two numbers are the color code, 18 means green back, silver sides, white belly. While a 808 is a black back, fluorescent orange belly, gold sides. There are up to 39 color combinations to choose from. You won’t remember them all but you will remember your favorites.
the top fish is gonna be grabbin on a mirror lure, if you all want to pick ... cant go wrong with ole faithful..808
While a 808 is a black back, fluorescent orange belly, gold sides. ...
NOW YOU KNOW WHAT THE PRO KNOWS !!
As with any lure, the more you use em’, the more you learn about them. The more fish you catch.

You gotta love that metaphor. Thanks for taking the time to post. I think I'm going to save that and take it with me the next time I'm shopping for Mirror lures.
Now what about some other lures on the market that do everything the M. lure does? LIke the lucky craft pointer for example. It's more of a freshwater bass lure but with a few adustments to hooks and other hardware, it could make an ideal inshore gamefish lure. They have neutral bouyancy, have rattles galore, reflective finish ect.
The one thing I never understood about most mirror lures is that they don't have their own action but thanks for explaining the added twitches. Plus they have all those hook hanging off without slip rings. They love to find snags and grass and what not.

That is a very good point. I use a lot of suspending jerkbaits. My favorite is a suspending pro rogue, (I order them by the dozen). The biggest 10 fish limit I ever caught was on one of those. I throw them on windy days when I can not feel a mirrolure. Big Trout love a jerk bait.

This thing? I've found they are fragile. I've broken the lip on this lure a few times and the ring to tie my line. I wasn't overly abusive either. Maybe it got damaged in the tackle box or something.

That is the one. Often times one bait last one day because there is very little paint left on it after a day fishing. You may think I'm kidding but im not. The Trout chew the paint off of them. black silver orange, blue silver orange, gold black orange. blue silver white. silver black stripes orange. Those things are deadly. I have tried the pointer but I don't like the wide wobble. Same with the yo-zuri.

Must be the full moon tides for the high water.
Back to lures; so a wide wobble isn't the ticket all the time? I've always thought that the wider the better. Or at least the better action. It is that way for stripers up north a little ways when we're fishing shallow water. You can still use crystal minnows which have an excellent finish, as a jerk bait. Some of them have neutral bouyancy too.

That is an excellent post about Mirrolures.
PART 2 ......
A little history about MirrOlure before we start. MirrOlure has been around since 1937 and many fish has been taken on them. It is said that it was invented during the Great Depression when Harold LeMaster stumbled over the Idea for the MirrOlure. LeMaster tripped over a fallen Walnut tree on his way home and took a good section of the tree with him to whittle the first version of the MirrOlure. MirrOlure is now made by L & S Bait company which also makes Iland Luresฎ, what most of us calls Islanders. MirrOlures are partially assembled in Costa Rica, Designed, Molded, Packaged and Tank Tested in the USA.
For many people, MirrOlure fishing seems to be a mystery. I can only guess that when a person looks at a display rack in the store, they are overwhelmed by the choices you have to choose from and I hope in this thread, I can help simplify this for you as well as help you decide what to buy for you area or at least give you a place to start. For this I will start with the standard "Classic MirrOlure", the 52M, or "M" series as it is called. Here some notes to help you out.
The 51MR, 52M and 52MR sink at a rate of one foot per second... "R" stands for "Rattle"
This is what Mirrolure suggests for depth to fish them at...
Model Length Oz. Hooks Depth
51MR 3-5/8 1/2 3 1-4'+
52M 3-5/8 1/2 3 3-8'+
52MR 3-5/8 1/2 3 3-8'+
There are also these in the "M" series and they have all the great features of the popular 52M series, but heavier. "The 65M and 77M are ideal for Tarpon, Striper, Bluefish and Snook. The 65M Deep Runner is a compact lure which casts like a bullet, making for longer casts. This lure is great for vertical jigging or use in deeper waters." The 65M is my choice for fishing in the surf when the wind is up or blowing right on the beach.
Model Length Oz. Hooks Depth
65M 3-1/4 1 2 10-20+
77M 4-1/4 1-1/4 3 5-10+
You will also find the "TT" series and the Series III ( with reflective holographic foil ) are the same as above but the "TT" has spots on the lure or in the "Series III, holographic foil' all the rest of the speciation's, weight, length and depth fished is the same as the "M" series' so now all you have to remember is "TT" stands for spots..."R" stands for "Rattle" ...now isn't this getting easer...
Now for the hard part...how to choose a color to fish with. If you look at the picture below you will see on the left side, starting at the bottom , colors I use @ night, keep in mind that some are what you may call cross over colors, that may have other times when I fish them in the day. On the right and middle are day time colors
Night time colors...All White 53M51, clear with silver body "TTS" series, clear with gold body "TTRG`" series, "Purple Demon", Pink gold & black "TT809"series, Pink silver & black back (very hard to find) 52M706, "TTRT" white pink with olive back, white, silver & black back "TT21"series, Black silver black back 52M56 series and last but not least, clear chartreuse 52MCF...oh ya!
NOTE the ones you see the most of in the picture !!! I never have just 1 of a color...you may lose one...
Day time colors...look at the water...muddy, can't see much at all (CRFS), Stained...clear (Tannic, can see your lure down a couple of feet), Stained cloudy (less than a foot) Clear green, Clear cloudy (wind blown...sandy, surf conditions) and clear.
For muddy, can't see much at all (CRFS), or Stained...clear (Tannic, can see your lure down a couple of feet), I like most anything with Gold, yellow, pink, red, orange, chartreuse & black in it... Gold for me seems to be very important!!!
In the muddy water I will use lures with yellow & pink 52M 704 (electric chicken) orange & black 52MR 730 or 808 color and red & white also in the series III "S 52MR" and "S 52MR26".
In the stained clear I will use pinks, black & pink 52M706 & TT809, orange & chartreuse, dark green & gold 52 M 22 & "TTR 22" and clear chartreuse 52MCF and red & white also in the series III "S 52MR" and "S 52MR26".
Stained cloudy, green (less than a foot) dark green back & gold 52M22 & TTR22, red head, gold body 52M805 Cloudy day, hot pink or orange head gold body 52m804 of 52MFGO Clear hot pink 52MPF and clear chartreuse 52MCF
Clear green...All white or red head white & silver body 52M51 or 52M11(the old standby), red & white with silver body series III S52MR26 or red white belly silver side 52M26
Clear cloudy (wind blown...sandy, surf conditions) go back to gold's...black gold side pink bottom TT809, dark green back & gold 52M22 & TTR22, red head chartreuse back silver side 52MCH11, Hot Pink silver side TTHP, clear hot pink 52MPF and clear chartreuse 522MCF
Clear water...early season (end of Sept to second week of Oct. ) I like the blues 52M24, TT24, 52MSD with gold bottom and in series III STTRCHBL. After that...Olive back pink side white bottom TTRT, olive back silver side white belly 52M18, clear silver sides TTS, old stand by red head white body silver side 52M11, white with silver side 52M51, clear chartreuse with silver sides white belly TTCFPR and in the Series III...black back silver side bone belly S52BNSBO, clear chartreuse silver side white belly S52MRCFPR, olive back silver side white belly STTR18.
Print this information out so you can take it to the store with you and then you will see what they look like. With this information, you now have a place to start with MirrOlures as far as what kind of water, day or night. Here is the link to MirrOlure's color chart Color Chart | MirrOLure Lures | MirrOlure.com (http://www.mirrolure.com/classics/colorchart.html) so you can see the colors. Oh one more thing...take a $100 bill with you to your local tackle store...you'll need it...
Now that you have a basic knowledge of the MirrOlure...how do you fish it. You know that the "M" series sinks at a foot a second so it is easy to count down to the depth you are fishing in. Remember that the heaver your line the slower your sink rate. Most fishermen I fish with prefer 6 or 8 pound test mono to fish MirrOlures with. I like and use"Braid". 20 pound is about the same diameter as 6 pound test...I add 2 to 3 feet of 12 to 20 pound test fluorocarbon to it for stealth. I also can't see much difference in the high vis yellow or the green. I like the "no stretch" of the braid..I feel the bite better.
Remember they are a "Twitch Bait" so when I fish them I reel VERY SLOW and then slow down some more...giving it a bump or "Twitch" with the rod every so often. Do NOT pull the lure with the rod tip...rod tip should NOT move more than a few inches (4 to 6") at a time...think of jigging a "Grub". When it is windy I tend to keep the rod tip down and hold it up on still days. I also like to fish them down wind whenever I can...again, I feel the bite better.
As far as a rod I like a stiffer tip than most. 6' 6" fast tip action, for the surf a 7' medium action because of handling them through the breakers. The softer rod is more forgiving.
I hope I have given you a good place to start with MirrOlures and you understand what I have said above. Feel free to ask questions as well as chime in with your 2 cents worth and may you catch the Trout of your life!
I can NOT claim credit for all of this.....I am just passing along info to the rest of you folks......Your Welcome Indeed

That is another excellent post. It is very nice of you to take so much time to make such valuable information available. As far as the wobble of the Pointer and Yo-Zuri. I have found that Stripers like a wide wobble. Trout like a quiver or tight wiggle with a lot of pauses. Most of the large Trout I catch hit the bait when it is sitting still or slowly sinking. You can controll the rate of fall for the most part with retrieve speed and rod angle. Sometimes with suspended fish they like the bait to sweep up from below them. This is done by raising the rod as you twitch the bait. For the most part I fish with my rod inches off the water with short sharp twitches just as described in the post. For what it is worth that is some excellent information given by racen35. I would love to Trout fish with that guy. Color is so important that I have many baits custom made by Mirrolure. One of my favorites is Black with an orange belly with rattles for nite fishing. Also purple back gold sides orange belly with rattles. Great bait on sunny days. But day in day out 808. We have caught over 50 fish over 7 lbs on that bait in the last month. I have one over 11 and one over 12 myself since jan. on the 808.

How did you do Wed? I was fishing and saw you. It might have been Monday. We caught 11 Wed with two big fish and slayed them on monday. I was in the white Privateer. That pic is from a guy that fished with me last week. They were all caught in the discharge canal. It was 16 degrees when we left the ramp. The smallest fish in that pic was over 18 inches.

Yeah i guess not the ditch but we were in the 70 deg water. Did the same today 15 or more redfish a baby trout and when we got out into the dismol canal we got a 3 lb or so and lost 3 others in the same hole water was 56-58 deg. So we found fish outside the hot water canal area. But to bad it was on our way in to the ramp. Are the reds in there all winter long like that too?
