i just got a single shot 22 mag rifle made by h&r, i can't find anywhere in the owners book were it says if you can shoot 22 shorts or 22long rifle shells out of it. any info would be helpful as i will be training a youngster how to shoot, and the shorter shells may be better to start him off on....thanks in advance for some helpful info.

I'm almost positive you can't shoot anything but 22mag. Isn't the .22 mag case wider than .22 lr?

I have an old 22 mag revolver. It has a seperate cylinder that allows you to shoot .22LR in it. You have to change the cylinders to shoot each shell.
I believe Russ D is right that the case is different in the mag and the LR.

Where are you planning on shooting? I could always bring my 10/22 and let you shoot it if you are close to me in northern MD.

Delmarve Sporting Clays. We had a big shoot there two weekends ago. We had tons of full auto's and .50 cals. It was a great time. I wouldn't mind another trip down there soon.

22 mag is longer case then 22 LR, 22LR bullet will not make it up to the chamber of the Mag and could blow up.

22 mags are also much more expensive than regular 22's, last I checked.

The Spring Shoot isn't that far away! We're working on some logistics right now.
Do you think anybody would mind if I cross linked the Spring shoot here announcement in the hunting forum?
I wouldn't guess there'd be a problem since MSF is free.

Not sure Spot, you could shoot Brandon an email and ask.

The actual bullet dia. of a .22LR and .22Mag are the same, HOWEVER the case dia. are NOT. This why you can't chamber a .22 Mag in a .22LR gun, too big, won't fit. A .22LR will chamber in a .22Mag, with a loose, sloppy fit. DON"T DO IT, DON"T TRY, the case can rupture.
Give H&R a call, this should have been your first contact rather than trust a bunch of yahoos with your life. Personally, I have done it but have had to clean the leading and powder from the chamber before loading the magnum casing. It’s like shooting a 38spl. from a 357mag.

yahoo? Other than that you are 100% correct.
Sorry if you do not resemble that remark, I guess I should retract that comment but I will not. My point is always contact the manufacturer first with questions like. As for the information I provided it is the wrong thing to do and will void the firearm warranty unless the barrel stamped with the designation 22WMR, 22LR, 22Long, 22Short. When I was a kid dad had an Ithaca 49 bored out to 22WMR and we shoot everything through it, some of the cases cracked but the gun has never blown up. Let us know what H&R tells you.

Which was not meant to suggest you should shoot regular 22's out of a 22 mag: just noting that 22 mag is not necessarily an ideal gun for plinking with a beginner.
