When to fish the bay

When does the fly fishing start to be productive in the bay? Last year was my first year at it and didnt do much with it untill the fall. Any help would be appreciated.

Last fall during the early rock season when everyone was using live spot my son and I were able to use gray clousers to catch 18 to 24 in fish. In the past we have been able to fly fish the spring rock season while chumming using the fly. Got the fish around the boat with chum and then cast to them. In both cases we were using sinking lines. My son use to live in Norfok and was able to catch gray trout fishing in the evenings with clousers during the summer month's. Also have heard reports of other catching croakers on the fly like you would catch redfish in the shallows. I think you can use the fly whenever fish are available if you are willing to invest the time to figure out what they'll hit and put in the time and effort.

It depends a lot on what region of the bay you fish since it is such a huge body of water. On the lower bay, we catch fish on fly every month of the year. Let people know the region of the bay that you fish and you will get a lot better feedback on what is best when.

Todd... best advice I can give you (IMHO) is to get a guide who specializes in flyfishing and make sure you tell him that you are a newbie. (Don't be shy everyone has to start somewhere) I'd also suggest that you do this before you buy a whole ton of gear. Reason I'm saying that is you will know what works and what might not.

There are a bunch of guys who can help, but if you look at the post directly above this one you will see a guy who will reduce your learning curve by leaps and bounds... (Sorry Chris... didn't mean to put you on the spot)

Chris is as good as they come..., knows the lower bay, knows flyfishing... and you will have a blast... PROMISE

Picked up a new lower end sage 9 wt rod that felt comfortable and easy to cast, tried quite a few before making my decision, with tibor large arbor reel, scientific angler floating line, 60-20 lb tippet...a few clousers, decievers, poppers, crease flys, now im ready to make something happen.

im located in annapolis and will be fishing anywhere from ccnpp to north of the bridge if anyone has any suggetions, they would be greatly appreciated.
