I was talking to a fellow today and he asked me what I thought was the single most important factor in finding and catching fish. My answer was water color. I thought it would be interesting to hear what others thought. Water temperature was a close second for me. I can catch fish in cold clear water but not cold muddy water. I am not looking for feeding fish, just catchable fish. Many times I have had a great day in water that was the right color but not the most desirable temperature.

Can't generalize all fish like that....depends on the species.

True, I think it applies to most inshore fish.

There are a jillion variables for sure.

The most critical for me is - hands down - having some time to go!

Followed closely by current speed and direction.

I have always learned a great deal from the Guides & Captains that I have fished with ! I have found that all agree & say water temp & clarity is very important. Also if possible learn as much as possible about the species you go after ! to me learning from The Guides & Captons has helped me the most not to mention other fisherman as well!

Most fishermen IMHO have the wrong idea about "good looking water". They see clear water and their reaction is: "Oh boy! - look at that beautiful fishing water". Fishermen should think of how much light is penetrating the water and how well the fish can see their prey. Often it will dictate where the fish are. I would much rather fish slightly dingy water over gin clear or muddy water.

If I had to pick the most important factor for all predator fish it would be presence of bait. Find the bait and often you will often find the fish.

I don't care if it's perfect water, tide, moon phase, bait... whatever... if you're not in the right location, you're not going to catch fish.

Exactly. If they ain't there, they ain't there. Move on.

Temp can be a big factor.......but like others have said clarity and the pure presence of fish makes all the difference in the world.....

You can't catch fish in your recliner. The amount of fish you catch is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend on the water.

The spawn has precedence over food and will dictate where fish are. For example, right now the James is loaded thick with bunker and there are no stripers to be found.

Very true. Fish are a lot like men....usually only 1 of 2 things on our minds...sex and food. :D And if we are not getting those things, we are thinking about how and where to get them. :pp
