This fish was caught on the New River near Blacksburg and measured 22.5 inches, caught on a 2” floating rapala. Jay is one of those guys who finished his masters, but never decided to leave a college town. Why not when you're single, there is good fishing and good scenery around. He's been telling me to make the trip the last few weeks in this warm weather because the fishing is outstanding. He's getting into numerous trophy prespawn smallmouth every trip. Oh yea... fish released even though he could have kept one over 20 inches for a citation.

that is a dandy small mouth right there....congrats to your friend. Fished the New River last summer...one of the top rated fishing rivers in the entire US. Absolutely one of the most beautiful float trips I and my family have ever done. The small mouth fishing was fantastic...we went in July. We saw numerous muskie swimming the river. The water was crystal clear to the bottom, even in 10-12 ft of water.

Super. I fished that area a lot in the late 70s and we got a lot of nice smallies...but never 22 inches! Super!

When you saw the muskie in the water, did you see them from a canoe? I always thought you had to be hire up to see them. What section did you float?
