He would have fought me for any reason...but telling him how to drive the boat woulda been armageddon. One time, I was on camera doing a segment and he was yelling and cussing at me to get the line in the water.....Jim Baugh happened to be attached to the hook end of the line. That woulda been great.
Mates do make more money by being a people person. As a rule, it is the captain's job to be surly and yell alot and the mate's job to joke and perform. ....AFTER there are fish in the boat, the captain is allowed to loosen up and quit being anal....just my opinion. I have taken charters with a boring, sleepy, or standoffish mate and they sucked even if we did ok.
