Went down to Hatteras Wednesday night with the hopes of locking up with some stud bluefin in the 100-250 lb range. The day before there was only one bluefin caught so we didn't have high hopes for the trip. Pat(Midwest Transplant) Rich and myself went down early and Eric(Sawdust) and Jake Captain of the Matador came down later.
We left early am without a charter escort through the 4 out of ten inlet. Not bad at all. We were greeted with nasty 5-7 foot waves all the way out. It really wasn't that bad just a head sea. We made 20kts. Deployed a spread that consisted of islander type lures on 80's and a planer. The planer was ran because I thought we might have a tough day because of the following day.
We dropped in at the 300 in 100 fathoms to nice 68 degree blended water and Ben dropped at the 250. Below us was a nice storm cell and a huge water spout what an amazing sight. Instantly it started to pour and Pat spotted a group of bonita jumping out of the water. Five minutes after lines in the planer is screaming and we are tight. We land this fish and have our limit after 30 minutes of fishing. Estimated 140-150 Lb BFT. Jake immediatly cores the fish and he goes into a ice bath in the tuna bag.
We continue to destroy huge bluefin tuna. We had dropped in on the exact spot which doesn't happen often and we felt lucky. There were boats at the 330 getting them and below as well. Our next shot was a long rigger bite that turned into 3 drifter bites with the best being a flat line bite that looked like a torpedo had blown up behind the boat right through a cresting wave. Unreal action from these monsterous fish. It was all you wanted for us. We stopped trolling and jigged 6 or 7 bites before calling it quits. After you reel or battle one or two my crew was ready to move onto something else. It was a day to remember tho. Those fish when they are on will hit everything you have if your stuffs right. I think we may have lost a few lures during the altercation.
We moved south west and started deep dropping. Instantly Jake brought up a 20lb snowy and we new we were in the right spot. We caught our snowy grouper limit along with some silver snappers, big sea bass, tilefish, a conger eel, amberjack, and other bs fish.
It was an awesome day to tangle with the white buffalo and catch those grouper. We are sore and tired today but we had a blast out there. Ben nice working with you and seeing you out there. Glad you made it back safe. The C-Note crew was on today and I'm proud of old C-Note getting down and back with no problems.
