Outside of a few charters, and surf fishing in OBX, I have done all my fishing in the Chespeake bay. I was thinking of taking the boat to OC at some point this season and heading out no more than 15 miles. Such a broad question but what can I expect or how is the fishing in that area ? The only fishing I have done is trolling with charters much further offshore than that. Thx.

The first, second, and third lumps, and the twin wrecks all hold some bluefish, mackerels, false albacore, bonito, and the occasional bluefin tuna (some years the bluefin are readily accessible- some years not- a few years back there was a good yellowfin bite on the twins, but that has not been repeated with any consistency). In August small mahi are not out of the realm of possibility. There is alot of structure to bottom fish on, but that is not my area of expretise, so i will let others chime in.

Good luck to you, and be safe.

If you are only going to run out 15 miles your best bet is to fish wrecks and artificial reefs. Plenty of opportunity to catch togs, sea bass, etc.

That's kind of what I thought.

Join the Ocean City Reef Foundation, get their list of wrecks, set up a chum slick and your chance at other species just may surprise you, cobias, spades, spanish and a host of small to medium size sharks,,, fish top to bottom, lots of fun phil

Thanks I just joined. Each time I have been on a charter, we have I think been somewhere in the 35-40 mile range. That sound right? And I guess out there trolling is the way for tuna/dolphin ?

DItto on what everyone else had said. A little further you'll have a better chance at bluefins early in the season. A lot of small boat guys head out to the jackspot in June to early July.

Same areas are a good place to try for sharks, if it interests you. Look at your chart, where structure is and figure out a drift line that will cover these areas. Deploy the chum, a couple of baits at different depths, sit back and relax.

These areas will most like hold threshers, lemon, blacktip, and a bunch of others. Makos tend to be found a bit further out.
