Massive Tog Catch: <o:p></o:p>
Pending World Record and New State Leading Togs<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
With the gorgeous forecast on Sunday, we decided it was the perfect day for a tog trip. And what a trip it was!
<o:p></o:p>
As we pulled out of the Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet around 0630, we were greeted by variable winds and big swells. It was a nice ride as we headed East to try a few promising hangs offshore. My crew consisted of Captain Skip Feller, Captain Larry Regula, and Joshua Regula.
<o:p></o:p>
Things seemed to start out well, and continued to get even better! After we hung up on our first wreck, we never left. After about 30-minutes of nothing but a dog fish to show, Joshua kicked off the day with the first tog, a nice one a little over 10-pounds. Now we knew they were there, so we settled in.
<o:p></o:p>
The action never seemed to slow after that. We were catching so many large fish, that we limited ourselves to two per person, so we only kept eight fish. We had two goals during this trip, but we lucked into a third surprise! Of the eight togs we kept, all of them were citations, with six fish weighing over 14-pounds. That doesn’t count the 12 and 14-pounders we released. We decided to come in early, so we were back at the dock by 2:50pm.
<o:p></o:p>
This tog trip will make the history books. I caught a new Pending Line Class World Record caught on 16-pound test at 14-pounds, 13-ounces. The existing record is 13-pounds, 11-ounces. Joshua’s largest fish weighed 15-pounds, and Larry’s largest weighed 14-pounds. The big surprise was Skipper’s fish. He was on fire catching lots of big tog. But his biggest didn’t go back; it was a catch of a lifetime. Skip’s tautog tipped the scales at a whopping 21-pounds, 13-ounces! This is the new State Leading tog for 2009!! That will be hard to beat. Another great day on the water with a great crew.

Thanks everyone, and congrats to my crew...especially Skip, who is blazing a new recreational fishing acheivement trail lately!!!
I think I answered averyone's bmails, but feel free if you have any more questions.
Brandon, the wreck was about 30 miles SE, water temp was 45-47, and we used crabs exclusively. It is my experience that other types of bait, such as clams and fiddlers, mostly attract smaller fish. Inshore wrecks and Bay structures are also good for mostly smaller fish, so I generally go further out to target the larger fish.
Hope this helps...good luck!!!

The marine biologists picked up the carcasses yesterday from the Fishing Center. I'm interested to find out the age on Skip's 21lb, 13oz tog.
I was surprised that my 22lb, 9oz tog from 2004 was only 13 years old????? :eek2:

Brandon,
I would use hermits in a second if I could get them. Just not many available. They are very deadly.
