I am still running an Evinrude 175 2 stroke and she still runs strong. But I was just cuirous when it comes time to repower her, are there big issues when switching over to 4 stroke ? Just wondering how it would match up with the stock warning lights (low oil, no oil etc...). I am running a 98 Striper 2100CC.

Well, if you're running an OMC 2 stroke, there probably isn't going to be a 4 stroke that will be compatible with most of the instruments you own. BRP (what was OMC) doesn't make large HP 4 strokes. Instead they make the Etec which is actually a direct injection 2 stroke. I believe that engine uses all digital gauges instead of analog, like most modern engines do. Sometimes they make a conversion kit. I know Merc did this with theirs a few years back. If you're going to do a 4 stroke, you're probably looking at a Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki, which will use different equipment than what you have on board.

Also, when you're dropping $15k+ for a new engine, might as well spring for another $500-750 for the right factory gauges in my opinion.

One other important thing to remember is that not all boats can handle the weight of the four stroke motors. They sometimes put the scuppers under water. I love the four strokes but have seen people in my marina have issues when they repowered to four strokes. Your engine weighs 375lbs. A typical Suzuki or Yamaha 200 0r 225 weighs around 580 lbs. You might get away with a 175 Suzuki at 485 lbs.

Wow, I thought the weight difference got alot smaller when you got into the bigger hp motors. I know a 2006 Merc bigfoot 25hp weighs 180lbs, while my early '80s 2 stroke weighs around 90 or so.

IF U ALREADY HAVE THE CURRENT 2 STROKE EVINRUDE WHY GO 4 STROKE WHEN THE NEW EVINRUDE ETECS (2 stroke) WILL BOLT RIGHT UP TO YOUR CURRENT STEERING, SHIFTER, OIL TANK, AND YES, EVEN THE OLD ANALOG GAUGES.... THE ETECS ARE JUST AS QUIET AND LOW EMMISIONS AS THE 4 STROKES.... Y CHANGE OIL WHEN YOU CAN BURN IT AND DONT HAVE TO WORRY BOUT IT.... JUST MY .02 AS AN MMI STUDENT FROM VA
