You will be readin reports when they show. 15 to 25 days, depends on how fast the water warms and how much SE wind we get. First drum will show on ocean side of ES on the edges of channels and cuts. Like water temps. at least 55 deg. Pups are in Rudee, Lynnhaven and ES marshes now. Fish on the fallin tide at creek mouths and marsh cuts.

Planning a trip for the 16th (May) over to the ocean side ES to try and find 'em.
Capt Pete, any restrictions on camping over there?

You cannot camp on the islands at all, there are campgrounds available right off rt. 13.

Great links! Looking forward to giving it a try sometime when the season kicks off. I'll be looking for a good ho to help me learn when the time comes.

The prime time for black drum kicks in around mid-May and goes through mid-June. I've heard the old timers say when the strawberries are ripe-the black drum are biting. I can't say one way or the other, but the last 2 weeks of May and the first week of June have always been good to me for black drum. We usually run out of Kiptopeke on the Eastern Shore. You might want to avoid the weekend of the black drum tournament over there if you launch out of Kiptopeke. It is no fun when 50+ boats head for the ramp at the same time (just after dark).
Fish big sea clams on the bottom. 7/0-8/0 circle hooks. It is pretty easy-kind of like catfishing. We throw anything OVER 30 inches back, which is usually most of them. 18-28 inch black drum go to the frying pan. It seems to be best fishing the last 2 hours of daylight, but it is worth trying around a tide change anytime. Just look for the boats.
Good luck.

You should try it in Lynnhaven during the summer. Check out Pirates Of Lynnhaven (http://www.piratesoflynnhaven.org) During the heat of summer it is hard to find a pup in there small enough to keep.
