Danny I'm waiting for my buddy who knows a couple of netters on the shore to let know there here. If we get some warm days it could be sooner. But you are close on that date. Come on Copper Heads !

After listening to our Pirate friend, Im amped to hit the Black drum this year. Ive never caught one while actually fishing for them. I got my first paper last year at the 3rd sight fishing for them. Set up 5 or 6 trip last year between Carolyn and Craig P last year and still couldnt get it right. Had peelers, sea clams, good location, correct rigging...but no bites. Had to watch the other boats wear them out. VERY FRUSTRATING.

All my rigs are tied up, ready for the drum. My leaders are short, 8" of 80 lb with a snelled 7/0 or 8/0 "J" hook on a fish finder rig.

Bill
Yep 80lb about 2 or 3' to give you a leader long enough to grab and swing the sharks in the boat, your not distance casting so a short leader isnt needed.

Pete, I can't believe the old dog can't give up those J's for the REDS!!!! I understand for the Blacks. And I am in 100% agreement with Pete, use the short leaders!!!!! It prevents the gut hooking. Mine rigs have been tied for months now. 80# with 8/0 or 9/0 owner circles. the owners seem to last longer than the gama's and sea circles. I am Predicting the first one caught When I go!!!!!!!!Last Year was April 11th and i had 5 Reds. Casey

Casey!!!!!! Wind goin SE today or tommorrow anyway give me a call when you are ready to go. No more biggins caught on Ocracoke, lots of pups!
50 7/0's, 50 8/0's, and 50 9/0's on 3' 80 lb. mono leaders... snelled and bagged, ready to roll. Re-spooling reels this weekend. I like enough leader to get over their backs, but short enough to be able to fling it a bit.
April 26th sounds about right for the Reds... maybe a bit sooner.

Al, i use short leaders, but do put a longer leader ahead of the barrell swivel. i put about 6-10' of 40-50# from the braid to the swivel with a bead on both sides of the snap swivel that i use for the fishfinder. this gives you something to leader with by hand when they get near the boat rather than gloves and braid.

I use 50# wind-on leaders with a short (1 foot or less) 80# rig snelled with 10/0 Mustad circle hooks, and a sinker with a fishfinder running on the long leader. The wind-on leader gives chafing protection if they scrape the line over their back or the anchor line, and the short rig makes it easier to cast pretty far from the boat. I use a 4 rod spread, two off the stern, one close and one about 20 yards back. The other two go to each side of the boat, 15-25 yards away from the boat. The current will often pull these side rigs back, so getting a good spread lengthens the soak time before you have to re-cast. I also keep a spare rod rigged and ready and at least two rods rigged with white bucktails with 20-30# leaders to sight cast or jig when the bite is hot. Also use the bucktail rigs around the CBBT after dusk for black drum during April, May and June.
Anybody troll for the big reds? I used to do that with some success along the CBBT in May-June in the shallow water areas between the third and the high level and along the edges of Fisherman's Island. Used Drone spoons and some big plugs with an in-line sinker to get them close to the bottom. They seem to like the snotty water under 10 feet deep.
Capt. Bob Pride
Yeah Bob, I've trolled... been a few years though. My FAVE is a 550 Hammered Spoon - gold. 20' leader behind a 4 oz inline sinker.

Im pretty excited to get back and chase them this year. I missed out on the whole season last year because I stayed back at school. After graduation its game on! I cant catch a red to save my life, on purpose that is. However, the blacks are a different story. Love them giant croakers
