I emailed the NMC witha question about the deadline and got a phone call 5 minutes later.

Just a friendly reminder ...

In a nut shell, on April 15th if you dont have a TWIC, your MMD or License is INVALID.

No they wont be sending out letters, but if your involved in a boarding, or casualty or some other way where the CG asks you to provide your MMD and TWIC, and you dont have the TWIC, your operating with and invalid MMD/License.

Kinda like a drivers license. Your responsible fro having it and providing it when needed.
I have a feeling the CG didn't think too long or hard about the employers side of the question and in retrospect, its probably not their problem. I guess if a company want to let there employees operate without the proper credentials, that's there problem.

They also said that if a person would have applied last week they would have there TWIC before April 15th. The longer you wait the longer you wait!!

The Senior Chief also said there would be no extensions of the April 15th deadline.

Waitin on mine to arrive now. I don't think ppeople grasp that the deadline is "concrete" no exceptions! I did find out that if you are operating commercially either for self or as an employee/captain for a company and are asked to produce the TWIC card it is the Captains responsability not the employer and the captain will recive the fines as it is HIS responsability. Once that license is revoked, suspended you must retest and reapply for your licenses from the beginning!

I applied for mine last year online, and went to the Chesapeake office on one of the first days that the office was opened. I hope my experience was an anomoly, because it took me almost six months for them to get me my card.

Good luck all,

If you have a passport it seems to take less time. Got mine four weeks ago in two weeks.

Tom,

I had a passport, plus MANY OTHER forms of ID. I also have a current security clearance and other items that "should" have made it go quicker. The problem was that they LOST the application in their system. Sounds like they've got things ironed out and working much smoother now. Maybe my mistake was trying to do it early, before they got all the bugs worked out.

I have a current captains "6-pack" license and everything else is current such as random drug, first aid, etc..
I do not have my TWIC card but I am NOT actively using my Captains license. Can I
just wait until I'm ready to use my license and obtain my TWIC card at that time, even if it is next year.
Any help is appreciated.

Specrig, REREAD the original post.

April 15, 2009 is the deadline. There will be no extension.

April 16th, if you dont have your TWIC you are holding an invalid document.

I agree its BS, I agree the "MAN" is shoving it to us, but it is required. I dont like it, I dont want it, but I have it.

The office in Chesapeake has about a 2 week turn around, just get over there 1hr before they open. If not you wont get in the front door, unless you have an appointment. and even then they do 2 walk-ins for every person that pre enrolled.

Their will be alot of people caught with their pants down on this one....and its their own fault...weve had almost 2 years to get ready for it.

I had to have mine because I drive a tank truck at work and I haul emulcified asphalt and have to go to a port to obtain it. Good luck to those who haven't gotten it yet, you'll be waiting.
