Hey all,
I usually run Umbreallas in the Spring but was looking to change up if it was slow..
Standing in Gander Mt yesterday I could not make up my mine on what size to get.
Mojo's from 10 -24 oz and Bucktails 2-8 oz ...they are Limited on Saltwater stuff up here in Winchester ... I may hit Rw's on my way down...
I am looking to sruce up the tackle box and any info is Great

I like to use droppers that are twice the weight of the trailer. I also like the swing hook variety of bucktail or Mojo. I dress the hook with a white or pearl shad or sometimes a red and white shad. I fish tandem rigs more than deep rigs in the spring although I heard that some of the large C and R fish were caught deep. I caught 2 fish in March with tandem 4 oz bucktails and 8oz droppers. Fish weighed 18lbs and were approx 35 in. One was caught on a white bucktail with red hair dressed with a white twister tail and the other was caught on chartruse swing hook bucktail with pearl shad tail. I also used a chartruse umbrella with a 4 or 6oz inline. Didn't catch any on that though.

Try tandems in 2oz/4oz, 4oz/6oz, vary the distance back to adjust depth. I run two wire lines deep in the Spring and they produce big fish. Either umbrellas with a mojo, or heavy tandem with good size in line sinker.

I live in charles town & have a camper @ Coles Pt. I rarely go the Winchester Gander, they just don't got it & prices ? WHOA I priced a new large landing net there @ 55.00, Went to Walmart in Winchester & purchased the same mfg's net for $17.00 I'm gonna swap handle
w/ old net, A 17.00 net may break. & the striper gear selection was sad, Stop @ Walmarts further South, Fredricksburg, Ect. they will have a manager there that fishes & will order in more stuff.

Dont be afraid to run single parachutes to keep them high in the spring. Remember to run the lighter lures further back to avoid tangles. Try some off the wall colors while your at it too, this winter I poured some shad bodies and did good with dark red and a dark pearl green.

Whats a good speed, I may not have the patience for trolling. I can normally always find fish, but putting around all day and not getting any drag taken off the spool is boring. Any pointers for a new troller, where when how?

I have a few larger crippled alewive spoons with stingers. Anybody ever try a 10-inch bass assasin on a crippled alewivw stinger?

Do you run planer boards? My best successes so far this C&R have been on single and tandem parachutes. 2 oz singles run anywhere from 40-80ft back and then 2oz/4oz tandems run 40-60ft back, all off boards. Like others have said, mix up colors. Try a chart shad on a white parachute, mix white and chart on your tandems etc.

Hey gunner- Ken's tackle in Fredericksburg has a pretty good selection of items and I try to support a small local company or Petey when he's in Montross. Don't forget to come by B-31 at coles and say hi.
A bit more on topic- trial and error has been my best friend on what works for me( trolling can become tiresome-always have some good friends along to laugh with).
I haven't had great luck with umbrellas regardless of the time of year but have them and continue to troll em on downriggers. my best hook ups have been on C/B bunker lures with no weight off planers. The farther back the better and we fight fish not a ton of lure weight. most spring fish as stated before are in the top 25' of the water column and it's better to be 3 feet over them than 1' under em. Good Luck, Mike

Captainbilly: I have ran sassy shad on the stinger hook of large spoons and caught with them better then without the shad.
As far as umbrellas, they have consistantly caught the largest fish for us season after season. Troll them with an inline to get them down . But then again there is no real science, what works one day may not work the next. Just keep changing things up till you find what they are looking for.
