I used to live in Toms River and moved to Virginia about 18 years ago. I understadn a lot of changes in boat laws have taken place there.

My parents still live there and I visit there periodically. I have been thinking about bringing one of my kayaks up there and fish one of the forges (I guess there's still fish in them) in the Barrens.

My question is this; I have heard that you need a boat operator's license to use a kayak. Is this true? If so, is it true just for freshwater or does it include saltwater, too?

Thanks

I did find an article from "The Times" it states:
"I was told that out-of-state boaters will be exempt from the law as long as they don't operate a boat in New Jersey waters for more than 90 days. This will allow transient boaters to move in and out of New Jersey waters freely. "
I hope this helps.

trackerz,

Thanks for the reply. My parents live the Lakehurst area and there are a couple of freshwater areas back near Bamber Lakes that I'd like to try out.

I am amazed that an operators license would be required for a canoe, rowboat, or kayak. Thanks again.
