I have read a number of posts that report shad being caught at Fletchers and even Deer Creek.
However, I can not find one pic of a fly-caught shad (hickory or american) in any of these posts.

Come on, people ... a pic paints a thousand words. It's April 14th, can't remember a season in
years that had no pics half way thru April !!

Charge the batteries and get back out there folks.

Fishing this year on Deer Creek has been real slow. On the 3-4 trips on the water I have caught maybe a dozen shad. The real surprise for me is that I've caught just about everyone on an all black marabou streamer tied in the same fashion as the red and yellow. Let's hope things improve soon.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

great picture Wayne...

Hopefully this rain will bring those shad upstream a bit. sounds like the boys in the river are doing ok... we just need to herd the Shad up D.C.

Nice idea with the Black Marabou streamer... Might have to tie a few up tonight and try em out.

Jonny..
I have pictures of a construction site that I'm calling home but that's about it!!

Hey bro.. you need to stop by. I'm only about 20 minutes from you now.

FWIW... Jonny can show anyone how it's done. The man can catch anchovy on grass flies for god's sake.

Wayne.. nice picture my man. It'll pick up soon. These dang nights are so cold it's screwing everything up.
I'm still waiting for a pass from Stalin. I was going to try the flats this weekend but they are having a bass tournament so that might be out. Would you try afternoon or morning up on DC if you were me? Maybe Saturday? Dunno... I'm just happy I might have a window to catch a stinkin fish this weekend.

Mike.. r u heading to the land of frustration (flats) anytime soon?

I tried with a cell phone of the first hickory I caught in March but nothing since. I haven't had any banner days yet. Maybe I feel that the hickory is not worthy enough for a photo but I find myself heart broken, bewildered and flustered when I can't catch them. They are tons of fun and I'm going to miss them dearly when they leave but I guess I just take them for granted at the moment.

I did catch a small American the other day. But I do mean small, like 15 inches but he still fought very well. Sorry, no picture.

Tony...I am up to my eyeballs with work, and haven't seen any reports to justify dropping everything and running over there. The boat is in the driveway though... so if the coast is clear at work and the fish reappear I am running out the back door. Maybe an afternoon trip ?? Can you swing it during the week ? Joe (Timeflies) wants to make it up too if the fish come back to the land of frustration... (It's like hitting yourself in the thumb with a hammer...It feels great when it stops.)

Heard some good things about the flats from last week before the full moon. Also hear the Potomac is fishing well for striped bass on the fly, with much fewer boats around. I've fished the Potomac pretty hard this year and previous years and for the life of me can't find a light tackle/fly fishing bite. If you think the flats are frustrating, try the Potomac.

So I'm heading to the flats on April 25-27th. Going to try and find a camp site for the three days and would like to leave my boat there until the C&R season closes on the 4th. Although this year it will probably stay open another week. Kind of stupid they close the fishery at all if they open it at all. All the fish are spawning this week. High temps or snow flurries, it will happen this week for the most part.

Anyone recommend any camp sites up near the flats and near a boat launch? In previous years I've just slept in the truck at the ramp but want to do it a little different this year.

Tony, on an average year both morning and evening catches is about the same. However lately evenings have been more productive with some saying they’ve caught 15 or more well after dark. I fished today for several hours before noon and caught 1 fish. With the temps predicted in the 70’s this week-end I would think things should start to get better.

Hey Johnny,
Lets go catch some and I'll take a pic of you! We are overdue for a mission.

Hey Frog Hair, I'm not surprised about your success with the All Black streamer. It has been my go to fly at Deer Creek for a while now. I was surprised that I never saw dark flies when people submitted pictues of their shad flies. I use black thread and put a few wraps of silver tinsel on the shank then the marabou. But, I've found a dark fly in low light conditions is successful no matter what species you are targeting.
I call mine the "All Black" in tribute to the great New Zealand rugby team. My sister and her family live in Wellington and I've become a big fan of international rugby. Ka Mate!

You shudda been here yesterday.

Deer Creek has been slow indeed. Cold water. The hickories are in there, but none too active. Caught a grand total of 2 in a couple mid-day hours on Monday. Had to get the fly down really deep, enough to hang up with some regularity. Here's a pic of the nicer of the two.

Dan, Frederickburg counts !! lekovacs, good pic.

Tony, "waiting on a pass from Stalin" ... that's awful, but way funny !!

This may be my first yr in 10+ without a caught shad ... lumbar area back pain (rather severe at times) from
wrestling a 55 gallon trash drum out of the water at Claiborne. Just ain't no spring-chicken any longer.

I know, I know ... you're supposed to dump the water out of the drum first.

Saw a Philly guy take some really nice 3-4 pound brown bullheads out of the Choptank last Saturday. I didn't
even know the river had any. That's my fishing report. When I'm not working it's been a monsoon.
