Decided to replace our seats with a leaning post but didn't want to fork out the big bucks so this is what we came up with. Used the existing seat pedistals and mounts. Added some extentions to get the right height and machined a cutting board and added rod holders on the back. The seat is plywood, covered in foam and then some kindof marine fabric my Dad got off e-bay. Seems to work pretty well! Let me know what ya'll think.

Man,,,,,you did a great job on that. Why did you use plastic rod holders?

For what you've got in it and what you'll get out of it, looks like a hands down winner to me. One thought, is there a backer behind the rod holders -- like a board or plate to tie the pedistals, rod holders and board all together?
Great job, particularly the hand holds on the back --GOOD idea!!

There is actually an aluminum frame under the whole thing. Its all welded together. Then the seat and cutting board/rod holder is bolted to that. Thanks! I like doing stuff like this:D

I know I am drumming up a old thread. But I actually had in mind something like this for my 19' 76 Mako. What did you use for your extensions if I may ask. I was just gonna try and some galvanized pipe with the right ID to fit over. But I like the way yours look. Thanks ahead of time.

Well.....the bases and bottom of the pedestals are original when there were seats there. We took the bases off the bottom of the original seats and bolted them to the bottom of the leaning post. Then I took a piece of aluminum heavy wall tubing and cut the outside dia. down on a lathe until it fit inside the original pedestal tube about 4 inches and rested on the shoulder. Then we ran a bolt through to secure it. The black piece is a plastic spacer I made to get a little more height. I work in a machine shop so its a little easier because we have the equip. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I have a friend that works for a pipe company. He found some galvanized pipe with the ID just above the pedestals OD. I am gonna try that and have those welded to a flat piece of steel and bolt my leaning post that I make to it. I like your idea tho. It seems that it would be a lighter weight setup.
