We hunted Charles City County on Friday and the gobbling activity was slow. We only heard one gobbler and he was at least 200 yards away. We called to him from 6:25 until 8:00. He never gobbled at our calling but free gobbled about every 15 minutes. He finally started getting closer around 7:45. At 8:00 my little man dropped him within 5 yards of the decoy. There was a second gobbler with him that I missed running away. The bird was 19 pounds with an 11" beard and 1" spurs. I am glad my little man shoots better than I do. Wild Turkey with Wild Rice last night. Very good.

Also, I registered both of his turkeys this year on my license and now I am out of tags. Did I do something wrong? I have been looking at the VDGIF website but can't seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

Congratulations to the boy:thumbup: The VGDIF looks at these sites so if you did something wrong, they will let you know. Best not to put too much info in writing.........Gary

Congrats Little Man!
You can kill 3 birds per license year. 3 tags - 2 are fall or spring and 1 is spring only. If you're out of tags, fishing season has officially begun!

I guess my point is I don't understand how to register a havested bird for a youth hunter that doesn't require a license. Maybe registering game for youth under 12 isn't required? If that is true how does the VDGIF track the real harvest data?:eek2:

From what I gather you probably should have taken the birds to a check station and informed them that they were youth kills. This is the same thing you do when you are exempt from buying a license. I'd give them a call tomorrow and see what can be done. You might be able to get your tag back for the youth day hunt but probably not the other.

This is the closest thing I can find on the VDGIF site:
What are the checking requirements and bag limits for a person exempt from purchasing a hunting license, such as a landowner?
A license exempt hunter must follow the same checking requirements and bag limits of a licensed hunter with the exception of notching a license tag. If you take the carcass to a check station, inform the clerk that you are license exempt and they will provide a big game check tag. If checking a deer or spring turkey by phone, when prompted for a license number use your driver's license, the last four digits of your social security number, or state indentification card.

In Virginia you register Big Game IE: Turkey and Deer with thier social up to 12 years old I think is the age, normal bag limits apply and you have to do it @ a check station.

There is an option to press when you call it in to check. The option is no lic. required. Then use SS#.My wife used that option checking a deer she killed on land we own last year.
Way to go on the bird.
If you checked no birds in the fall you can check three in the spring.

You actually have one tag left!!!!! Unless you took one yourself during the fall. Then your SOL!!!!!!
Spring Turkey Season
Bag Limit
One per day, bearded turkeys only. Hunters may take one, two or three bearded turkeys depending on how many turkeys were taken in the fall season.
Bag Limits
General: One per day, three per license year, no more than two of which may be taken in the fall. So this means if you shot none in the fall you can harvest 3 in the Spring.
Plus if your under 12 y/o. You just go in and say, my youth just harvested a bird or deer and wants to check it in. Any knowledgeable checking station should know the law. There is no license for under 12 y/o.
You do the same thing if your a landowner and harvested a bird on your own property. Just remember that this doesn't allow you to harvest over the season's limit. Just because you still have tags. If you harvest 3 birds on your own property. Doesn't mean you can harvest 3 more on someone else's private land because you have three tags left.
It's always fun when a CO (game warden) thinks he has caught you in a lie. While he is looking at your hunting license and asking questions. Like oh I see you haven't taken a deer/turkey this year. Thinking this because your licenses has not been notched any. Then you reply oh yea I've taken one. Then he looks at you funny and starts licking his chops. WHAT DID YOU SAY ????? Yea I checked one as a land owner :rolleyes:. That really hurts their feelings then!!!!!!!
AND CONGRATES TO THE YOUNG MAN THAT OUT SHOT HIS DADDY!!!!! Way to go dude. That's why I took my daughter on the youth day. I couldn't carry a gun with us. She was the only one packing that day!!!!!!

Thanks for all the help. Knowing I can still get at least one for myself and take the little man is enough for me. Good Luck to all.
