Nice catch but they appear to be females full of Roe that could produce thousands more for fishermen in later years. :(

WOW only 16 posts before somebody whined about keeping a fish of a lifetime. :(

tblaum,
I acknowledged that it was a nice catch.
NOBODY here is whining, I could care less about the individual keeping the fish. I was just making a observation and a fact about what the roe could produce.
So don't jump the gun to start something that is not there.

So... the big fish obviously has some age on it to be 17 lbs. No doubt that alot of it is roe, but to reach that size it has been around for quite a few spawning cycles already. If it was caught 5 years ago, in August with no eggs at 16", it would have been OK. Or killed at 18" or 19" with no eggs, it would be "nice fish". But since it has made it for so long to be so big, ONCE AGAIN with roe, and finally caught and killed, now the angler has taken thousands of fish from the water???
I have never understood the mentality of killing a big female fish. Most big fish get that way from age, shouldn't we be more upset about killing SMALL female fish? They are the ones that are going to produce more eggs through the years.
Regardless, VERY nice Togs, congrats to the anglers, and I would have killed them too. My dog is not too particular about what kind of roe she is lapping up out of the yard

Never fished for TOG. Planning on going next Tuesday. Do you guys fish for them at slack tide or will any tide work? Second question - Do you tie up to the bridge pilings when you are fishing for them? Third question - how much weight does it take at CBBT?
Thanks for the help in advance. Ps - Going croaker fishing in the York on Saturday. I will keep you posted as to temperature and fish caught.:fishing2:

Hey Guys,
You don't have to worry about all the eggs that big tog could have laid. It's a male! Tautog exhibit sexual dimorphism - a fancy way of saying males and females look different (like a bull dolphin and a cow). Large males typically have very dark backs, a steeper head profile, a more pronounced, white chin and often a very white belly as well. Females are usually more of a mottled brown color, have a much more rounded head profile and lack the pronounced white chin. The big tog on the right has the classic male look. The one in the middle looks like the typical female (notice the much more rounded head and no white chin).

3 Questions on TOG fishing. 1.) What tide do you TOG fish or does it make any difference? 2.) At the CBBT do you tie up to the pilings while fishing for TOG? At CBBT how much weight do you use? I have heard either 2/0 or 4/0 circle hook. Sound about right. One better than the other. That's 4 questions.
Going to try to fish for them on Tuesday 4/28. I will be in CC 21 wellcraft - "Miss Nancy"
