Have a 2000 Yamy 225 2 stroke. Its very well maintained and washed, etc. I even have a factory cover on it but all of a sudden, the top of the cowl is starting to peel off in multiple spots. Some spots are 2" big. Its only on the top and not anywhere on the sides. The primer underneath looks new and there no rust or oxidation, etc.
The engine runs great and has good water pressure and isn't running hot (that I know of).
Went to Bills Marine and they were surprised also. Thinking I have to sand down the whole top of the engine cover and repaint it.
Has anyone heard of these kind of problems and known of the root cause. I was thinking too much heat off the engine but its running fine and no alarms, etc. Could it be a paint problem - its now 9 years old.

My 1987 Yamaha faded and peeled. I had it repainted by an auto body shop. It needs it again. You might see if they'll pay for a repaint.

Same problem. Paint peeled and faded badly. Motor runs great, but looked like heck. Had it repainted and it actually looks worse. I think only way to prevent it, is to put cover over engine when done fishing.

Captain Ahab hit it right on the head. I had to repaint mine and now its kept under motor covers. Haven't had a problem yet.

I have an 2004 Yamaha and have always kept it covered from day 1.
After fishing I will wash it off and every now and then put a little wax on it.
No fading or peeling it looks brand new.

I called Yamaha and they had no explanation. Funny thing is that I do have and use a Yamaha engine cover. Something must have caused the paint to peel. Yamaha thought maybe some cleaner got on it. They weren't much help though.

I recommend when the time comes to have it covered in vinyl with your favorite design. It will last longer than the paint. I have noticed the vinyl stickers do not fade, but the paint does. This would probably be cheaper as well. Just an idea!

I have a 2004 25 Horse. All the paint on the top just faded and disolved. Now it is just a bare toped cover. The sides look good? I have maintained it washed and waxed when there was paint on it. Sun damage is my opinion. I have a 1994 Mercury with no paint problems? Go figure.

My cousin has a 225 Yamaha on his May-Craft and it is doing the same thing. Runs good but the paint is peeling off the cover.
