I've got a Navy reunion coming up this Sept that will take place at VA Beach. Thinking about combining it with a fishing trip. Two questions, are there waters where a 17 foot Aluminum with a 50HP would be big enough to fish out of with good weather? Second, how about a campground with a boat ramp, or one close by?
Last time I was at VA Beach, was in 1968 when I was stationed at Oceana, guess it changed since then Huh?

There are two campgrounds on General Booth (close to Oceana) which are close to the Owls Creek ramp and Lynhaven Inlet is fishable in your size boat. Its about ten miles from the campground.

Here is 1 option.
KOA Campround.
There is a free pulic ramp right down the road from the campground.
If the weather is rough you can stay right inside Rudee Inlet and fish.

edit
no boat ramps but, First landing state park is great! We camped there this weekend and will again this summer.

Also, if you are military Ft Story is not bad, Class six store right around the corner from the camp LOL. Don't no the web sight but we are staying there 4th of July. make reservations early. Ft Story is about half the price of First landing. Both have beaches and fishing if you are land locked, although there are better places to fish from shore.

There is a little campground at Dam Neck (now I think it is called NAS Oceana Annex Dam Neck) if you still have base privliges. Very small campground with no ramp, but good surf fishing.

Wait a minute since you are a military man. . . check out the facilities at Fort Story. They have tent camping as well as cabins. You can fish off of the beaches which are like a 3 minute drive from the camp sites.
My brother is in the Army and he stays there kind of sort of every year.
The real question is: How long in advance to you have to reserve things? I doubt that you will get a cabin but maybe you can get a tent site.

There's several bases that have camping facilities if your still affiliated. Here's the Mid Atlantic Navy MWR site.

Here's Ft. Story's ODR site.

Ditto Seashore State Park (now 1st landing something or another). Great beach, and you're around the corner from 2 boat ramps.
