Fished out of OI on 4/28 with Dave, Jamie, Steve, and Rob. Went Deep Dropping for tiles and seabass in about 50 fathoms. Rob hooked a 40 pound Mako on a 5/0 circle hook, 60 pound leader, and squid for bait. Crew worked great together, clearing lines so I could properly position the boat for a chance at a gaff shot. After about 10 minutes the mako was by the port side and Jamie executed a perfect gaff shot. The mako was quickly gutted and headed. Had to use my infloor fish box. We also limited on tiles and had a nice catch of seabass. Seas were flat. I wil not forget this trip! Craige (Mary E)

Nice job. Mako steaks for dinner.

I hooked a big shark (not a mako) bottom bouncing one time off HI and blew out my torium anti-reverse and lost him. Since I had just bought the reel a month ago from BPS I took it back and they gave me a new torium. I was amazed a big shark would eat a little piece of squid.

Yea Casey but when you're sword fishing you have the right gear to battle big sharks. When bottom bouncing and big shark hits your torium....it's a different ballgame. We've cranked up some giant sharks sword fishing at night...does wake the crew up for sure.

I think he was talking about deep dropping and catching swords and sharks as a by-catch, not sword fishing and catching sharks.

YUUMMMYY fresh mako steaks! I still got the blisters from twisting up about 100 rigs for the upcoming shark season. Do me a favor and let momma swim through so I can hang a biggun in the OCST or Mania!

I caught a 6 foot shark three weeks ago out of HI on my little Sealine 20 with 30# powerpro. It took 40 minutes to get it up 400' for a release. AJ's and sharks can be a royal pain!

Craige and crew congrats on the Mako. It didn't have another gaff mark in it, did it? Thanks again Craige for the hospitality last Friday!

Craige, pretty work on the mako steaks!
There's been alot of sharks out there the last month, but I've only seen 2 mako's. Here's a different species from our trip monday out of HI, we were bottom bouncing a Red hole and this guy gave me a good workout. BTW it was a torium 20 with stock drags that did the job, I swear the carbontex do more harm than good on those reels.

BTW it was released after a quick photo.

Not long enough.

Well if he would have said it was 48 pounds it would have been legal according to the chart. Judging by the fact that he had a NMFS fisheries enforcement official on the boat with them when it was caught, I would say it was probably close enough.

Craige didnt post a picture. The picture posted was from john latham on a different trip. Craige definately knows a mako when he sees one. He's been doing this a long time.

Wasn't implying mine was a mako, I don't know sharks very well, but I do know a mako.

I was fishing with 4 Va Marine Police Officers. Estimated length was 4 and 1/2 feet. The cops said it was legal so we put him in the boat. Would not fit in a 178 cooler, headed and gutted. Had to use my infloor box in the box. The cops took pictures. Craige

I stand corrected. Sounds like he just made it.
