What is the best bait to use for red drums? We are going out for the first time for drum at the CBBT in a couple weeks. I heard that clams (i guess fresh?) and crabs are really good. What kind of crabs do you use and where can I get both of these baits? Probably putting in at Back River and was wondering if Wallaces sells them. Thanks for all the help and good luck!!!!

Peeler crabs!!!! 1/2 of a crab on a hook with a fish-finder rig for red drum. Stinky sea clams for Black Drum.

I've also done real well with regular crab and menhaden....seem to do better with
the menhaden heads....for the reds
sea clams for the blacks

I use fresh-caught (on the way to the shoals) Croaker and Bluefish. Cheap and effective. What I don't use I eat or give to neighbors...

Black Drum - Sea Clam, Hard Clam... they'll eat a peeler or hard crab too.
Red Drum - Bunker works well, but can be a pain when the pickers are bad... same goes for Peeler Crab (plus peelers are expensive). A small live spot or hard crab bait is best when the pickers are eating you up. My two favorite baits are cut Bluefish and Hard Crab. When baiting a Hard Crab, break the points off his shell, clip some of the legs if you want. Once on the hook, lay him on the deck and step lightly on his shell to crack it... not "mash" it.
