Work (day off)
Got to have all 3 come together. But seems it's rare to get all three together. Got some nice water pushing towards the back side of the cigar again and the weekend is almost here.....but....but....the WEATHER IS GOING TO SUCK.

The water only cooperates when you have to work and there is no way out of it... It has happened at least a half a dozen times to me in the last several weeks. I feel your pain.
My rule of thumb is the Three B's: Bird, Bait, Beer. Not necessarily in that order!!

Dave, I stand corrected....you are absolutely right. You can have the first 3 but if the wallet is empty, we ain't going nowhere.
Sunday has improved a little. That water has to be very near the cigar now.

TTTF is my rule. It trumps the three Ws in a lot of occasions.
TTTF = Trailer To The Fish!!!!

Brilliant Lou....you're going to trailor to fish on day you don't have off from work in bad weather where there is no warmer water....brilliant plan I say you. I had no idea a trailer could do all that.

True but in many cases if your good with the 4th W (wallet), you can slide some to the 5th W (wife) and she will be happy out shopping while we are out fishing.

This week one of the W's is "wheel" for me. For those of you who don't know what a wheel is, I'll use it in a complete sentence (in plural form):
One of the wheels on my trailer won't turn.
I just ordered four sliver-cadmium plated brake caliper/pad sets for my trailer. Meanwhile, I'm "hotwheeling" it to the closest ramp for fishing. (Yes, I ordered bearings too).

Well I had work, wallet, and wife lined up OK but the weather is no good and the water is not right. The cold labrador current is still screwing things up. Everytime an eddie looks like it pushing in, the labrador stops it in its tracks and gets sandwhiched between the water starting at the point and the eddie itself stopping the flow. Already happened several times this year. I don't recall in the last few years the labrador running to hard. Hopefully it slows down soon or will continue to wreck havoc with our chances for nice water off Virginia.

I can take off work whenever I want, there is always warm water and plenty of FAs in Hatteras to catch, all you do is wait on the weather. Is there shame in catching FAs I think they are fun to catch.

Mike this huge amount of labrador current is absolutely what is screwing everything up. I have NEVER seen it run so hard. Several times this year I have seen 1.5 or 1.8 knots of cold southbound current. The labrador doesnt normally run this hard and is pumping in cold water so fast that the sun is slow to heat it up.

Look at these water temp shots from May time frame for 2006, 2007, 2008 and tell me this is not the same pattern we see each year. In 2007 you will see why we had banner tuna bites early. Boy was it some rocking fishing with Big Eyes too. Same Labrador Current butting up against the Gulf Stream.
Just have to wait for the eddie's and schools of fish migrating North. This year we had the eddy which held the BFT for several weeks before htey moved on which was great action for customers. Now the fish are on the move and you have to be int he right place with the right baits for them to eat.
Cross your fingers for more fish!!

Oh yeah here is 2009 shot for same days. 2008 Had colder water and stronger flows. They look pretty similar don't they?
Thank god it does not look like 2008 did!

Of course the labrador current is ever present but I still contend that this year she is running harder than years past. I say this from having been out in it. One thing is for sure is the stream is going to do whatever the stream wants to do. I agree this year it's going to be all about being at the right place at the right time.

Oh FISH GODS please let my studies of the temp break lead my boat to the promised land of the Yellow Fin Tuna...... May we all have weather windows which allow us to seek the elusive YFT in their natural environment. Whilst we savor the time on the ocean with our brothers, so may we all enjoy the wonders on the ocean. So we may eventually bring the YFT to our boats broadside and stick a gaff into their flesh. That we may enjoy the taste of their seared flesh on our BQs. Weather permitting of course....
For goodness sake I could not buy a YFT bite last year, and the price of gas made that even more painful. PLEASE LET ME CATCH A YFT THIS YEAR ON MY BOAT.......
