So why are the blacks always beat to hell and the reds are clean and pretty? Especially in posts from this weekend...

It's a good question. Mine certainly didn't get that way by netting them and snapping a quick pic. Perhaps it's because they are older, perhaps it's they way they feed, perhaps it's the way they huddle around the islands during the summer months.

They are old, slow, and bottom feeders. That would be my guess.

Their health is on the decrease, fewer of the species,
water temperature is higher, and I'm not a marine biologist,
but perhaps they are working harder to establish a nest.
