What is the best fuel additive (or stabilizer) to add to your fuel tank at the beginning of the season ? My boat has been sitting all winter with a full fuel tank and I'm going to fire it up next weekend. Thanks for reading

I use STA-Bil, but you should have put it in at the end of last season. Problem is that you could already have phase separation and could have water in your tank. You should probably check it before you fire her up. I use it every time I add gas to the tank.

My ETEC Owner's Manual says Evinrude "2+4" fuel conditioner only. It's probably generally the same as any other product but I've used it religiously and have had no issues. It is not at the usual boater's supply places but you should be able to get it through a dealer or online, like I did.

Cheers.

My post was misleading. I put the Marine Stabil in the tank at the end of last year. Someone had suggested that I use Seafoam (?) at the beginning of the season this year

If your motor runs OK after startup, don't add anything to the fuel. Use as much of it as you can then add fresh.
SeaFoam used to be one of the least expensive and the best decarboning agents available. It still is great for removing deposits that are caused by old gas/oil, but is now around $10.00 per pint. No need to add it if not necessary, and if your motor runs OK, it's not needed.

In my book it's (SeaFoam) the best thing ever put in a can besides beer. In the past year I have used over 15 cans of it and ALL of my internal combustion engines thank me at every startup!

I usually just add 1/2 a tank of fresh to each tank pre season and burn each tank down to about 1/4 after the season. Then I burn each tank till it loses suction in the first few weeks. I use a good fuel filter and have never had a problem.

BTW, Message to Polecat

The new 90 Yamaha with the stainless prop us unbelievable. It picks my boat up like it was a toy and I spend my time on top of the water now. Having an underpowered boat is a terrible way to live but I just couldn't cough up the 8k till now.

Thanks

I was told just this year that whatever you use, make sure it is a ethanol specific such as the Stabil for ethanol. This mechanic told me that he has seen good results form people using the Startron and that was his recommended preference.

Been using Startron for the past couple years, it keeps the fuel from separating and holding water. My boat mechanic recommended it since ethanol is now common in gasoline.
