I am sure that it is probably just a matter of personal preference but I am new to surf fishing and wondering what the experts here recommend. Spinning or Casting rod? Thanks for your time.

depends onwhat type of reel you're using. Both have their pros and cons but the bottom line is you should use what you are more comfortable with

Thank you. I just bought a St. Croix PSRC106H2 (10'6") surf rod on eBay. Stupid me, I did not realize that it was a bait casting reel until I had alread bought it. I have a nice Shimano spinning reel that would have gone perfect with the rod but I don't even own a conventional. I have used conventional reels before but I do feel more comfortable with spinning. I'll figure it out and appreciate your input very much.

for what that rod throws, conventional is a better choice. lighter, stronger drag....once you get used to it you will love it.

For heavier lead weights and bait, I prefer conventional since casting the heavy stuff on a spinner is a bit tough on the index finger. I know they make the release gadgets, which may be wonderfuly, however I've not tried them.
If your not proficient with conventionals, especially one without a level wind, there is a bit of a learning curve. I like to introduce someone to a new fishing technique (ex. surf fishing) with a rod and reel combo that they are comfortable with...

Ed check out the Diawa sl20 or 30sh for the casting rod that will get you started. I think you will be happy with either of those reels. The only difference is in the line capacity.
