Common Sharks off the Jersey shore?

I've been doing some fishing off the shore in Stone Harbor, NJ using clams hoping to find a lone striper out there but no luck yet. Usually just catch a small shark or two. I'm assumming these are probably dogfish sharks. Can anyone confirm this? If so, is there anything else to avoid on them other than the spine- if they have one?

I wouldn't go sticking my fingers in their mouths, but other than the spine, I have never had an issue! Only other issue I have with them is stealing my bait over and over and over and over again! Ain't even worth putting out bait at times!
