novice surf fisherman here; just curious as to how many oz. of weight would be suitable for surf fishing the ocean. I've heard a few different weights, all the way up to 4oz., but that seems like a lot. Thanks.

ustick,
Depends on your gear, where your fishin', what your fishin' for, and what the conditions are at the time ?!
For tossing bait, I've used anywhere from a 1oz to a 14oz lead weight to surf fish the VA/NC coastal barrier islands. From the beach (and pier) generally prefer 2-3oz for double drop bottom rig on 8-9' medium action spin rod, 4-6oz on med-light 10' puppy drum rod w/fishfinder (spin or conventional), and then 8-10oz for the big dawgs w/11-13' med-heavy to heavy action conventional surf rods.
Hope this helps ya to get it dialed in and we haven't even started to discuss lure fishin'. Bottom line use what you like and works for ya [wink]
