My friend Jim and I drove into the mountains today to fish my favorite wild brook trout stream. The PA Fish and Boat Commission rates this as a Class D Wild Trout Stream (A being the best). Despite the rating, we've always found the fishing to be superb. The two flies of choice today were a #14 Carpenter Ant Parachute and a #14 Yellow Stonefly. This stream is also classified on the Wilderness Trout Stream List. There is a trail that runs along much of the stream, but it's a good hike in to the best water. We had a good day. Nothing huge, but lots of healthy wild brook trout. We actually cut the day short, because my friend had to get home. The fishing just seemed to get better as the day went on. Hard to walk by all of those unfished pools on the way back to the car...

Very nice pics. I am heading up to State College next week and hope to do a little fly fishing while I am there. Great looking flys. Do you them yourself?

We fish State College often. Where do you plan to fish? Great streams up there. The Sulphur Hatch on Spring Creek and the Little J should be coming off pretty good next week. Also...thanks for the compliment, those are my flies.

Just in case you aren't familiar with the shops up there, here are a few websites...

Not sure where I am going to fish. I n=have never fished the area. I was going to stop in the the local fly shop and get a few suggestions. Figured I would spend at least one evening on Spring Creek somewhere.

Call ahead and get a stream report. The TCO fly shop also has daily reports on their website. Nice guys at both shops. They'll hook you up. Put you on good water with the right flies.

Just let me know if you're ever in PA. I'd be happy to take you. Of course, you need to reciprocate if I ever get to Germany! ;)

That's sweet. Thanks for the report and pictures. Fishing streams like that is about the experience of the locale, the beauty of the fish and not the size. I actually think I know that stream. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it used to be stocked, but they stopped stocking because of acid conditions. The native trout, however, do fine. I know a bunch of streams in central PA like that.

Thanks. It could be the same stream... ;)
