i have a 24 albemarle express and i have rigged a large danforth and a good lenght of chain to it. Could it be too much. i never feel like the hook sets, is the chain preventing the anchor from setting?

Can an anchor be too big?? YUP I forgot mine on one summer day. Stopped by Tylers Tackel and told them of my situation. He let me borrow the decrative anchor by the driveway. I actualy did use it !! It took me over an hour and almost a heart attack to pull it up from 65' as it had set it self. BTW I was in a 18' bayliner runabout. I Never forget my anchor now and also carrie 2 .
Joking aside how deep are you and how much rode are you letting out. The chain will HELP you set the hook not the other way around. I think you most likely have a short rode.

The chain is essential to help the anchor set. How much chain are you calling a good length? For your boat size I would go no less than 12' of heavy chain (3/8 or more). Most folks will tell you 1 foot of chain for every foot of boat or 24' in your case but (IMO) I think that would be a little overkill. Bottom type and sea conditions play a big role as well. Typically you'll need about 2 to 3 times as much rode as compared to the depth; more (5 to 7 times) with a strong current or rough seas. 25' depth = 75' rode in normal conditions.
